Intro to AI-assisted Text Mining in Proquest TDM Studio
This webinar covered text and data mining with ProQuest TDM Studio, with a focus on analyzing large collections of newspapers and other primary sources. The presenter, Alex Wermer-Colan, demonstrated how to use the TDM Studio platform to access content across disciplines, work within a Jupyter notebook environment (using Python), and perform analyses such as sentiment analysis over time, topic modeling, and named entity recognition. The webinar included analyzing emotions in a dataset about “air balloons surveillance” from 1980 to 2022, extracting topics from New York Times and Philadelphia Inquirer articles (e.g., military leadership, TV programming, political shifts, elder abuse, and sports injuries), and using pre-configured visualizations or custom code via the Workbench Dashboard.
