IBIT mentoring program

This semester I participated in the IBIT mentoring Program, in this program I was very lucky to meet my mentor Sondra Barbour, who is a very successful women. She gave me a lot of great advises on the possible career path I could pursue in the future. I met with my mentor 2 times throughout this semester, I was able to ask questions such has how did she get to where she is today, what is the biggest advise you would give to me and etc. My favorite advise she gave me was “it’s not a no, just not now”. This was very insightful to me because I have always been rushing and looking for opportunities in every kind of way. However, this has caused me to be scared of rejecting to people. Because I would think that, this is really good opportunity, but sometimes the things I would be doing are the same, and it is not really helping me grow as much as I think it might. But after my mentor has told me about how she dealt with opportunities, she said it is okay to say no as well. And even if you say no, that doesn’t mean the opportunity will be forever gone, in the future, there will still be similar opportunities that would come to you. So I shouldn’t rush. This relates to my career goals because after talking with my mentor, I feel like I have gained more knowledge in dealing with school, life and also gaining more information in the field of IT and knowing even more options I could pursue when I am looking for internships and jobs after I graduate.
