The “Internet of Things” (IoT) is a network that allows virtual devices, machines, animals or people with unique identifiers (UIDs) to collect and exchange data with minimal human interaction. It is all about the sensors collecting data remotely from several devices like smart thermostats or smart locks found in houses, biochip transponders found on farm animals, and heart monitoring system and smart continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) found in the healthcare. IoT is important as it saves time for people from interacting with data and helps with taking better decisions.
IoT has both advantages and disadvantages. It collects data of a person’s daily lifestyle and creates direct integration between physical and virtual world. This allows firms to analyze the data and make more efficient decisions, saves time and money, and help generate higher revenue. As a consumer’s daily lifestyle is being monitored, this gives the firm a chance to enhance customer experience. Some of the disadvantage of IoT are that it can collect so much data and if these data are not securely stored, data leakage could be major issue. As well, that many devices are closely connected, the data can be manipulated which can result in giving wrong information.
In my class, MIS 2502, we learned about the importance of ETL: Extract, Transform and Load process. It is easy to collect unstructured or even structured data but transforming it into the right useful information is the important part. IoT collects and saves data, yet the important role is to transform this data to make it useful.
