Data Analytics Big Data Report

Overview

Big Data is one of the hottest buzzwords in business today and some may be asking why. Big data is the collection of millions of pieces of data on things such as customers, and business practices ranging from items purchased, to gender, to yearly income. Big businesses such as Amazon and Wal-Mart are utilizing this data in order to better aim their products at customers statistically more likely to buy it. With this ability, companies are increasing their revenues exponentially with increases like Capital One who increased their annual net revenue by 17% between 2009 and 2014.

Relation to MIS 2502

The reality of big data is that, while its benefits are exponential, so is its size and challenges. In order to sift through this data and make sense of it, companies will need to rely on data visualization tactics. Some software’s that are designed for this exact purpose include SQL, R, and Excel. All of the latter are tools that can take hundreds of thousands of lines of data and turn them into meaningful graphs and statistics that can be utilized for decision-making processes.

Business Example

Google has been utilizing R extensively in order to provide the best marketing service to its customers. logo_chromeGoogle is able to determine the effectiveness of banner ads by visualizing the data they’re gathered in R. For example they dug deep into banner ad data that was, on the surface, telling them that HTC banner ads didn’t drive traffic because people weren’t clicking on them. After review, they found a correlation between people seeing the ad and visiting the site later but never clicked the ad.
