Information Technology Assistant at Fox School of Business
Temple University is a public university located in Philadelphia, PA. Temple’s MIS Department is ranked in the top 15 of over 1,300 undergraduate MIS Departments in the United States by the U.S. News and World Report.
I have served as the Information Technology Assistant to two Data Science classes of about 60 students.
The course itself comprised hands-on, experiential problem solving through the use of computer-based data tools employed by virtually every organization. Students try out these tools using a diverse collection of data sets, ranging from NBA player statistics to high school dropout rates to corporate sales data. Students learn how to make impactful and persuasive arguments through visual data presentation. The main tools used in this class are Microsoft Excel and Tableau.
In my role as the Information Technology Assistant, I assisted the professor with in-class instruction, evaluating assignments, and other administrative tasks. I helped teach students how to read, organize, analyze, and wield data in order to solve real problems in their future careers and day-to-day life. I helped students create data visualizations and interactive dashboards in Tableau.
Even though I have taken this class before, I learned new things everyday on the job such as shortcuts on Excel and Tableau. Some of the skills these students learn over the course are lost after they have taken the class, however, I am able to keep the skills I have learned since I get to redo all the exercises, homeworks, and in class activities along with the students.
