Big Data Research Project

big-data-word-cloud

Achieving the Objective

I chose Pandora Media, Inc. as a company that could benefit from the mobile analysis of Big Data to better serve its consumers.  Pandora Radio is a music app that creates playlists based on their individual customers. As an avid Pandora user, I thought it would be a great idea for the app to expand its use of Big Data to create better music playlists.

Achieving the Methodology

  •  In-depth research about Pandora Radio through online databases (Mergent Online, Factiva, etc.) and online sources (Pandora Radio website). Found out that their royalties and legal fees are currently outweighing their current profits.
  •      Drew different solutions to represent that information and found that a good analysis for Pandora would be a weather analysis
  •      Found research on the strong correlation between music vs. mood vs. weather
  •      Researched Pandora’s extensive and large music database called Music Genome Project
  •      Found a potential solution where Pandora could use their big data database, Music Genome Project, and connect it with Pandora’s individual consumers’ local weather. This can potentially help Pandora better predict more accurate consumer playlists based on the consumer’s local weather and the type of music they like to listen to during that weather condition.

Achieving Expected Outcomes

  •     Built a PowerPoint explaining the music app competition (Apple Music, Spotify etc.) is aggressive and the usage of a weather analysis for Pandora Radio will keep it innovative and attractive to consumers.
  •    I increased awareness of Big Data by presenting my findings to a Business Weather Intelligence Company called Planalytics and to many business professors from universities such as University of Chicago, Yale, University of Texas Austin, University of Miami, etc.
  •      Potential collaboration with Global Center for Big Data Mobile Analytics (GBM) and the company, Planalytics.
