Technical Specialist Intern

This summer, I had the pleasure of interning at the headquarters of Deacom, Inc in Chesterbrook, PA. Deacom is a producer of proprietary ERP software for manufacturers and distributors. Touching all corners of their business, Deacom provides an inventive solution to the old and archaic ERP mold. In 2017, Deacom was voted one of the best places to work by the Philadelphia Business Journal. I worked in Support, recently renamed the Kaizen department, which gave me an unique perspective on the business. I got hands-on experience with software when it worked and when it did not. This bolstered my problem-solving and critical thinking skills, among many others.

As I said previously, I spent this summer doing varied types of work within Support. Learning an entire ERP software in 12 weeks is not a small task but it proved to be a great learning experience. I managed the support email inbox, reading and synthesizing customer issues as they came in. Additionally, I worked with Quality Assurance where I tested bugs in the software and then retested once a fix was built to confirm it worked correctly. I think this was the reason I learned so much because I was seeing how the software should and should not behave. My final project was a comprehensive installation and troubleshooting guide showing how to install Deacom’s software onto handheld scanners. A major sore spot of customers involve these scanners so the guide I created was definitely a huge addition to the help system. This summer has been a great learning experience, showing me how small departments are able to get a large amount of work done through communication, teamwork and collaboration.
