Big Data
Big Data is a term used to describe large sets of information used by businesses, researchers, and many more to search for and identify certain trends within the data. Companies are constantly working to gather tons of information from their customers in order to spot trends and buying patterns in order to sell more products and services. They also use it to try to outperform competing companies and lately its become a crucial tool in the business world. Big data is also used widely in the healthcare industry in order to cut costs, improve treatment and much more.
Big data is tied into many things covered in the Data Analytics course, MIS 2502. The course teaches us how to analyze and convert data into visual charts and graphs. This is done using multiple powerful business tools such as RStudio, Microsoft Excel and MySQL. RStudio and Microsoft Excel are very useful for converting large data sets into graphs and analyzing patterns within them and MySQL is a helpful tool to access and analyze data within a database. The course is a very helpful introduction to the use of big data allowing students to work hands on with it.
A simple example of how big data is used is can be found in Netflix or basically every streaming service. They keep track of what type of shows or music the user streams and provides helpful, related suggestions in orders to improve customer experience within the platform. In today’s day in age, the use of big data can be found virtually everywhere and it is important that we have some understanding of how it is used.
