Diversity & Inclusion in Internships Virtual Career Fair

  • Sponsoring organization
    • Career Eco – Virtual Events
  • Details of the career fair (e.g., where, when)
    • November 3rd, 10AM – 3PM, Multiple virtual Zoom meetings
  • What you learned
    • In this career fair, I interacted with employees from Abbott, Home Depot, and Infosys Limited. I was also given the opportunity to listen to one of the Abbott employees, Sean Palacio, discuss his experiences in the workplace in relation to diversity and inclusion as well as other speakers from the other featured companies. During this career fair, I learned a lot about the main companies’ internship programs as well as how their companies value diversity and inclusion which is a very important value to me. The companies also made it known that an applicant should be persistent and open when interviewing and to only go for the position if the position heavily relates to your goals and values.
  • How the career fair relates to coursework or your career goals
    • When I listened to Sean Palacio, the Divisional VP of Diversity and Inlcusion at Abbott, talk about diversity, I took away a lot of information I will use in my future positions. Being a Black woman, there’s a good chance that I am going to have to work harder than my counterparts to prove my worth within my field. To try to avoid this, Sean told us attendees to find a company whose values align with our own to lessen the likelihood of being involved in a situation like this. He also told us to always speak up right away if we hear one of our coworkers speaking a negative remark related to race, gender, sexuality, etc. to ensure that these remarks don’t continue.
