Big Data

Big Data

What is big data? According to my own online researching and the studying from MIS 2502, my definition of big data is the information and the patterns hidden in information, which is able to help predict future and protect humanity. However, how to make information useful and how to find the hidden patterns are much more important, so we need analysis tools, like R Studio, Excel, Tableau…

MIS 2502 is a class that teaches me to understand the entire process of transform raw data into useful information and patterns. The most interesting thing during the class is data visualization, which is full of magic, and able to transfer numbers to forms, charts, and graphs, in order to show patterns. In class, professor Jung said that humans are amazing pattern-recognition machines (Jung 2018). Fortunately, through the patterns and information, economists could predict how the entire market will go in the future; meteorological stations could predict how the weather will change in 7 days. R Studio, which is one data visualization I learned from MIS 2502, could output a decision tree to even predict humans’ next-choose or next-action as long as you input enough data, like individual history behaviors, previous decisions, and characters. Humans are enjoying this benefits that big data provides.

Due to the benefit above about predict humans’ next move, scientists put a huge crown on big data’s head. In the meantime, this benefit could be a risk what if the information leak to terrorists’ hand. According to the top-ten risk in 2017 and 2018, cyber risk and data security became the biggest concern of firms and individuals, because leaking of data could cause plenty negative consequences not only to an individual, but also the entire society. Hacking crisis incidents are gradually becoming a usual thing since Stuxnet was hacked in 2005. What’s worse, if hacking action is happening in traffic lights or huge factories, there might give rise to physical damage, like car accidents, unclear leak, to cities and threat citizens lives.

Put all into a nutshell, the world is being digitized, because of big data. Big data can provide benefits and convenient lives for human beings; however, it is a double-edged sword, humans may step in extinction, because of big data.
