Cybersecurity Professionals: The New Warfighters for National Security Webinar

Information Security professional Rodney Newton, who has over 20 year of experience in the cyber security field led a webinar that covered multiple topics involving cyber security. Some of the reasons he talked about why we have cyber security is to prevent supply chain risks, espionage, etc. He talked about the Defense Industrial Base(DIB) and how the worldwide industrial complex enables research and development, and how they contain important info such as production, delivery, and maintenance of military weapons systems, subsystems, and components or parts, to meet U.S. military requirements. Mr. Newton talked about how the DOD deploys IT audit “soldiers” and how they play a crucial role in improving the security of organizations by assessing and evaluating the effectiveness  of different organizations IT systems. He talked about how their work protects sensitive data and gains customer trust. Mr. Newton talked about how The Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) primary purpose is to ensure their contractors are actually meeting cybersecurity standards. CMMC emphasizes continuous improvement in their IT systems, and provide security to defense supply chain. Mr. Newton touched on the different IT audit opportunities such as becoming a Registered Practitioner(RP), Certified CMMC Professional(CCP), License Publishing Partner(LPP) and more. Overall, as a student majoring in MIS I found this webinar extremely beneficial in learning about what goes on in the cyber security fields and the different avenues one can take in the cyber security field.
