Information Technology Assistant
- Job function (e.g., overall role, assigned tasks)
I work with Professor Mart Doyle to answer questions, reinforce important concepts, evaluate assignments, and hold weekly office hours for his MIS 2101 Section 007 class. I attend class meetings about once a week, where I field student questions and assist with In-Class Activities. I also hold two office hours each week and communicate with students via email to help them reach various learning objectives.
2. Examples of projects (e.g., list the projects you worked on and what you accomplished)
One main project I have worked on is completing Max Labs 1a/1b and then evaluating student submissions for this assignment. I spent about 3 hours going through the Max Labs assignment myself and learning about Salesforce so I could better assist students if they had any questions. After they turned in this assignment, I was able to efficiently evaluate all of the submissions against a detailed rubric. Another project I completed was proofreading and adjusting the class website to ensure that all schedule changes were reflected and no errors were present on the site. I worked with Doyle and helped identify tweaks that had to be made to the class schedule and fix minor errors throughout the web page.
3. What you learned and how it relates to your major (e.g., describe what you learned from this experience in the context of specific courses)
So far as an ITA, I have learned about the importance of helping others, honed my attention to detail skills, learned how to evaluate assignments, and have gained some experience in Salesforce. I frequently field questions from students and help small groups with In-Class Activities, which has taught me about the importance of helping others and how to guide students to success without just giving them the answers. I also have improved my attention to detail skills from evaluating several assignments and thoroughly reviewing the class site. Assignment evaluation has also taught me how to compare submissions against a rubric and understand what items are in and out of the scope of an assignment. Finally, because I took the honors version of this class, I never got to complete MaxLabs or work with Salesforce. Working as an ITA this semester in MIS2101 has given me experience with Salesforce and taught me the basics of the platform.
