MIS 3501: Data Centric Application Development
In this course I learned how to write code in HTML, CSS, and PHP. I also expect to learn how all of these languages interact in web development. Learning the basics of MVC has been extremely useful to me as the basic idea of MVC is also applicable to general file management, which I’ve used to become a more organized professional.
MIS 2502: Data Analytics
In this course I learned how to analyze business data to develop insights to improve a firm’s competitive advantage. I also learned how to create and manage databases as well as using MySQL and R, which is an essential skill for most jobs in the IT industry. I am currently using a lot of the skills I picked up from this class to build and design databases for storing data I collect for research projects.
MIS 3506: Digital Solutions Studio
In this course I gained some experience working as a business analyst for the design of a prototype for a new company intrasite for ARI Fleet. In this course I learned how to use Justinmind for the creation and presentation of prototypes, how to create project deliverables, in addition to the best practices that business analysts use to breakdown a business process and then improve it through the use of technology. This class taught me some fantastic analytical skills that I am currently using to try and improve some business processes in my current workplace.
MIS 2501: Enterprise IT Architecture
In this course I learned what factors companies need to take into account when setting up IT Architecture such as data centers for example. I also learned how to quickly and efficiently conduct research about projects involving IT infrastructure decisions as well as how to use Microsoft Excel to create a cost-benefit analysis to determine whether these projects should be approved or not.
Mis 3502: Application Integration and Evaluation
In this course I learned how to use PhP and Javascript in tandem to create a basic web application that allowed prospective renters to find properties available for rent. This web application allowed landlords to post their properties online and receive online applications from renters whom were interested in their property. My main takeaway from this class was how to use multiple types of code for a singular purpose of creating a useful web application. This class gave me a better understanding of the difficulties of writing web apps, which has made me much more appreciative of some truly fantastic applications that are used in the business world.
MIS 3535: Lead Global Digital Projects
In this course I gained some experience working as a project manager for the design of a prototype web-based clearinghouse for LawAtlas.org. While working as a project manager I gained experience managing a team of business analysts as well as learning how to prepare project deliverables such as a Project Communication Plan, Work Breakdown Structure using Microsoft Project, and a Project Risk Management plan. I also had the opportunity to earn a project management certification, the Comptia Project+ Certification. The experience I gained from cooperating/managing a team of business analysts to develop a prototype was extremely useful to me as I plan on becoming an IT project manager at some point during my career.
MIS 4596: Information Systems Integration
In this course I learned a lot about cybersecurity and the importance of it’s role in any company. In this class I learned how hackers conduct attacks on personal devices and how to do this myself, as well as learning how companies can protect themselves from malicious hackers. I also learned how the nature of hacking has evolved over time and led to some extremely effective techniques to circumvent most firewalls, such as social engineering for instance. Being more knowledge about cybersecurity techniques has made it easier for me to manage my internet security, which is an extremely important survival skill in our day and age.
