Research Google Cloud Armor as a Web Application Firewall

  1. Cloud Armor Research Project Final (updated)
  2. The goal of this research project was to first educate myself on Web Application Firewalls, a security tool used by web applications (web-sites) to reduce unwanted and malicious traffic. The next goal was to educate myself on a specific Web Application Firewall, called Google Cloud Armor. I then wrote a lengthy report (linked above) explaining how Web Application Firewalls differed from traditional firewalls, how they fit into a web applications architecture, and than the value Google Cloud Armor provided as a Web Application Firewall. I was to write this report as if I was presenting it to an executive at an organization. Overall I had to revise the report three times before submitting this. From this report I learned that websites would likely face outages and significant threats to data confidentiality, integrity and availability without WAFs like Cloud Armor protecting their backend infrastructure. I learned that Cloud Armor is a viable WAF with many preconfigured and custom filters available.
