Project Management Intern at Walmart
About the internship
This summer, I worked as a project management intern in Hypermarket Merchandising Department at Walmart (China) Home Office for 10 weeks. This internship program was aiming to support 2016 Mid-Autumn Festival Mooncake sales. Interns would get involve in the whole business flow from contracts signing to the end of sales in the role of assistant merchandiser. Our duties include managing commodity files in the merchandising system, supporting sales-related documents, managing orders, completing data analysis for sales reports and coordinating with suppliers to ensure shipment, goods display and promotion activities.
What I learned from the internship
During the internship, I developed detail-oriented skills, technical skills and time management skills. In the first stage, I contacted 9 mooncake suppliers in order to know their products and collect their quotations. Then using excel to enter data and set up new commodity records in the system. There may be some commodities already existed in the system which either in active status or in inactive status. I need to contrast the data and choose to update or just active the records. It is significant to ensure the accuracy of each data in the system which will directly affect the order process. In the second stage, I collected merchandise certificates, promotion plans, circular pictures and other sales-supporting documents from all suppliers. In addition, final checked all commodity records and make changes if needed. In the last stage, I assisted with order placing and started running business reports. I learned about retrieving data from the retail link system and using pivot table and vlookup to make reports which showing the sales rate and receipt rate of this year and last year. I learned to analyze the reports to discover problems and make improvements accordingly. I really appreciate to have this internship because it gave me insights to the retail industry. I have learned many marketing tools and technical tools to help market decisions.
