IT Experience
2014 AIS Social Innovation Track Competition
Tempe, Arizona
The 2014 AIS Student Chapter Track Competition, held in Tempe, Arizona, allowed members of AIS chapters across the United States to showcase IT projects spanning several disciplines including IT Security, IT Service Management, Social Innovation, and IT Video. As final round competitors in the Social Innovation track, my team members and I developed an innovative tutoring, mentoring, and academic advising web application to compensate for government funding inadequacies in K-12 schools throughout the Philadelphia School District. After proposing our idea to a panel of judges, we were awarded first place due to our awareness and holistic view of threats, opportunities, funding, resources, supply/demand, marketing, and technical capabilities related to our web application, called TeachBeta. The project provided me insight into various aspects of project management, application/web development, business analysis, and even entrepreneurship. Overall, the experience was unparalleled by any other project I had previously worked on in a collaborative environment.
CD+i “Talking Trash” Design Challenge
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
The 2014 CD+i “Talking Trash” Design Challenge recognized the environmental degradation occurring throughout Philadelphia caused by excessive litter. In order to combat this issue using innovation, students from high schools and universities in the Philadelphia and surrounding areas collaborated to design and develop a solution to reduce the amount of litter we see everyday throughout the city. My team, who identified the cause of the excessive litter to be improper disposal and containment of trash in trash cans, designed and developed sensor technology that would alert trash collection companies when a trash receptacle was full or close to being full. The experience was valuable in that I was able to meet and network with students from surrounding schools while collaborating to improve the cleanliness of Philadelphia.
