2013 Temple Analytics Challenge (Finalist)

About the Temple Analytics Challenge:

The university-wide competition, organized by the Institute for Business and Information Technology (IBIT), launched Oct. 1, 2013. The challenge attracted 183 entries from 400 participants across seven schools and colleges, including both undergraduate and graduate students. The Fox School of Business, School of Tourism and Hospitality Management, Tyler School of Art, and College of Science and Technology were among the schools represented in the competition. The challenge tasked students with making sense of Big Data through visualization, a key component of data analytics cited by experts as a promising path to job opportunities.

The entrants could choose to solve one of three challenges from the World Bank (finding global economic development opportunities), Merck (creating smarter travel policies) and the City of Philadelphia (fostering Philadelphia’s economic development).

The Temple Analytics Challenge’s focus is making sense of big data through visualization. Visualization is a key component of data analytics, and experts cite visualization as a path to a “hot job” in big data. Students, in teams or as individuals create an original graphic that provides clear and meaningful insight into a problem.

The challenges were developed by an advisory panel of industry leaders from Walmart, Independence Blue Cross, the World Bank, Electronic Ink, the City of Philadelphia, and Merck. Finalists present their work live before a panel of judges. The judging panel includes industry leaders from NBCUniversal, Lockheed Martin, Merck, Citi, Campbell’s, City of Philadelphia, and RJMetrics. Finalists present their work in a live judging event.
