During the summer of 2012 I worked as an IT intern at Octagon Research Solutions in Wayne, Pennsylvania. Working as an intern in the IT department I learned the many different positions that are needed to keep a business running effectively and efficiently. Engaging and interacting throughout weekly meetings with the IT department, I learned the duties and responsibilities of a project manager and those working to accomplish the project. Throughout the internship one of my responsibilities was to help structure and implement a new help desk page for the company. I gained background knowledge of the concerns and problems employees encountered in their working environment. I personally designed and created a FAQ page on the new help desk site, to answers common problems employees may have. I also had hands on experience on how the help desk service worked and was able to help diagnose and resolve issues that occur, gaining experience for future reference. My last responsibility was to find an efficient way to organize and track the spending that the IT department overcomes on a monthly basis. I used Microsoft Excel and Qlikview to organize and make locating the expenses more efficient for the company. I definitely gained experience that could not have been taught in school by actually working in a business environment and getting a feel of what I could potentially be doing one day.
