Executive Chair of Technology – HootaThon (December 2014 – November 1, 2015)

HootaThon

Exciting News:

After presenting the HootaThon mission to numerous MIS classes in the Spring, and
tremendous support from Professor Mart Doyle – AIS is now a part of HootaThon!!

As Executive Chair of Technology for HootaThon, my job is to manage and lead the Technology Committee members by assigning various tasks and/or assignments pertaining to improving HootaThon from a technological standpoint.  In addition, I oversee all graphic designs for advertising purposes, merchandise designs, create brochures/newsletters, and manage the HootaThon website, and e-commerce store.

Technology Committee:

The Technology committee handles all graphics, packets (with any other Executive Chair(s) if necessary) and the HootaThon.org website.  This committee will also handle creating all advertisements for events including coordinating all video/photography for events.  This committee controls the HootaThon image across all facets of Technology – For example, creating our website, creating our new logo,  etc.  Students interested in being a part of the Technology Committee should have decent experience with Photoshop, Adobe, WordPress, HTML, CSS, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, etc. and/or a be PASSIONATE about technology and willing to learn.  Proficiency with any software is great – and willingness to learn is even better!  We need to be on top of our game so other Executive Chair’s and Committees can confidently turn to this committee when we need advertising and website additions.

  • Create all graphic images for social media
  • Create all videos for recruitment and operations teams
  • Any and all things associated to HootaThon.org
  • Coordination of videography/photography for all events

Back in Spring of this year, I came to the realization that if we wanted to be taken seriously – we needed to do-away with a colorful WIX website.  I wanted to have more sophistication to our website, a more professional/clean layout, while still being user friendly for another Executive Team Member to make quick adjustments if necessary.  Therefore, my summer project was deleting the old website and starting from scratch.  In addition, I created a secure “Intranet” for HootaThon Executives, Captains, and Committee Members to communicate more effectively and efficiently.  For example, each of the 18 committees has their own page that included a calendar which organized their meeting times, deadlines for completing tasks, etc., and also a discussion board where anyone involved with that committee could post and ask questions, and everyone would receive notifications via email with updates pertaining to a post involving that committee.

Towards the end of HootaThon, I learned a lot about managing a databases and some coding with what I’ve learned in Data-Centric Application Development, and I created a database with all of registered members of HootaThon.  The DonorDrive.com website that all of our donations go through essentially already provides anything you need in that regard, but I was more so interested in applying what I had learned and exploring different possibilities.  Unfortunately, due to the time constraint, I was not able to successfully code the search webpage and link it to the HootaThon database I created, but overall, I encountered a lot of different things that I don’t think I would have been exposed to so it was a great learning experience.

Official Fundraising Numbers For HootaThon 2015

My personal fundraising goal for HootaThon 2015 was $1,215, and I am proud say that I have exceeded my goal.  In total, I have raised $1,440 and I am ranked in the top 15 fundraisers out of 1200+ participants.  In addition, the Association of Information Systems team exceeded their goal as well!  AIS set a goal of $6,500 just a few months away from November, and they officially raised $7,597!  I was really happy to get AIS involved, and collaborating with their officers was a great experience because it led to me getting more involved with AIS as well.

After HootaThon’s main event on November 7th, not only have we achieved our goal – but blew it away!  Our goal for HootaThon 2015 was to raise $215,000 by November 7th, and we have officially raised $280,620.76 – exceeding our goal by over $65,000!
