This is an introductory workshop to OpenStreetMap (OSM), the world’s largest collaborative mapping project, as a powerful resource for urban research and spatial analysis. Participants will learn to navigate the OSM ecosystem, extract specific urban datasets (roads, buildings, amenities, land use), and contribute improvements to the map through direct editing. The session covers data download methods, quality assessment techniques, and integration with GIS software for spatial analysis. Attendees will explore real urban datasets and learn to identify research opportunities using this rich, community-generated geographic information. Perfect for urban planners, geographers, social scientists, transportation researchers, and anyone studying cities and built environments. Participants will gain access to a vast repository of up-to-date urban data while learning to contribute to this global mapping commons, supporting both their research and the broader scientific community.

This workshop will be offered as an online session via Zoom. You must register for this workshop to receive the Zoom link via a confirmation email. On the day of the workshop, use the link to join the session.
