Artificial intelligence is a concept that has been around since the 1950s, but has recently become both more popular and more common in the mainstream. Artificial intelligence refers any man-made software that displays intelligence, namely the ability to learn and make decisions. Artificial intelligence is able to compile data and use it to make improvements to its own operation with little to no human interference.
Humans should care about artificial intelligence because it can have a huge impact in one’s life. To illustrate how much artificial intelligence has an impact on one’s life, one need only look at his or her email account; the spam filter is an example of artificial intelligence filtering out undesired messages. Not only is artificial intelligence used in email sorting decisions, but credit decisions as well. Whereas in the past, bankers may have used analytics software like R to create and interpret decision trees to make credit decisions, artificial intelligence can do the same type of advanced analytics in a fraction of the time and report to the banker. No advanced data analytics skills needed on the part of the banker.
Artificial intelligence is rapidly evolving as technical breakthroughs continue to be made. The future of artificial intelligence seems to be moving toward more visible technologies such as driverless cars, cybernetic enhancements, and even the long dreamt of robotic companion. The future of artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming the present and science fiction involving artificial intelligence may soon become science fact. It is, to say the least, an exciting future on the horizon.
