Including Sustainability in Your Cloud Strategy

Name of sponsoring organization: Fawad Qureshi

This LinkedIn Learning compares the “greenness” of the cloud to that of public transport. The cloud is one resource that can be used across multiple users, unlike on-premise systems. Just like how public transport reduces the amount of traffic by giving multiple people one resource to use, the cloud reduces the amount of idle time. To increase sustainability, it is important to saturate existing infrastructure before adding new hardware because more infrastructure running at a lower capacity consumes more energy than one infrastructure running at a higher capacity. More infrastructure generates more carbon and uses more resources (more expensive). Each company has a responsibility to report Scope-3 emissions which cloud is a part of. Therefore, even though the Cloud Service Provider pays the electricity bill for the data center, the customers should still care about how much the bill is.

Working within any career it is important to know how to make your products and resources more sustainable. Especially working with technology as it is harder to see the impact on the environment
