Student Worker – MIS Coding Helpdesk

Working at the coding helpdesk gave me a great opportunity to assist fellow MIS students with their programming assignments while also sharpening my own skills. Most often I was helping other students with homework or upcoming projects in MIS 2402, which would usually be focused on communicating with APIs and developing functional web pages with Javascript(JS), HTML, and CSS. Projects I assisted with included developing a successful login page with a combination of JS & HTML5, using JS to create animations on a page, and one student’s extra credit project using a NASA API to retrieve data from the ISS.

These experiences were all welcome opportunities to refresh my knowledge of JS, as well as to apply the debugging and program abstraction techniques I acquired from my CIS 1057 course in C programming to languages I was already acquainted with. Working at the helpdesk has greatly improved my confidence and comfort with these programming languages, as well as my instruction abilities. Without this experience, I likely would not have received a summer position teaching Java to high schoolers. Furthermore, had it not been for working at the coding helpdesk I may not have received an offer to work as an analyst at Deloitte, as client-side work tends to involve considerable amounts of interaction and comprehension of others’ programs.
