comcast_logothumb

I am proud to announce that I will be interning with Comcast Corporation in the Spring of 2016, working with the State and Local Tax Team. This is a tremendous opportunity and I am so excited to be transitioning to this completely new role within the organization.

Comcast Corporation is a global media and technology company with two primary businesses, Comcast Cable and NBC Universal. Comcast Corp., where I will be working, is the nation’s largest video, high-speed internet and phone provider to residential customers under the Xfinity brand and also provides these services to businesses as well.

The Comcast State and Local Tax team is responsible for all tax related operations within the city and state jurisdictions as well as their localities. They handle all tax returns, disputes, and audits as it relates to Income Tax, Gross Receipts Tax, Annual Returns, Sales Tax, and Use Tax. However, due to the magnitude of Comcast’s operations, including all the different areas in which they do business, Comcast has separated tax into two specific areas, State and local tax, and Federal Tax.

As an analyst working in the Tax space, I will be responsible for developing data quality, streamlining business processes, and creating workflows as well as providing the necessary documentation for my processes and procedures. I will provide business intelligence support to the State & Local Tax group for state income and transaction tax compliance and state audits.  I will utilize a combination of both my business and  information systems background to collect data, perform analysis, develop and maintain databases and write reports.  I should be highly comfortable with high volumes of data and detail oriented while possessing the ability to work well with a large number of team members in a very fast paced and deadline oriented environment. In order to effectively complete my assignments, I need to possess excellent organization, written and verbal communications, and time management skills.

I hope to further my development and enrichment in areas such as database management, data analytics, and information management, as this is closely related to my coursework as an MIS major. I believe the decision to intern with State and Local Tax team will tremendously improve my skills in the MIS field and make me a premiere candidate for a future position with the company, with four internships worth of experience.

Please see some additional roles and responsibilities below.

Roles and Responsibilities include:

  • Supports State & Local Tax team by developing and maintaining SQL databases with large volumes of data for tax compliance and audits.
    • Writes reports and provides data analysis with trending and fluctuation metrics.

    • Works with internal departments to obtain necessary financial and billing data for state tax compliance and audits.
    • Works with third party consultants, legal and accounting firms to provide data related requests.
    • Will provide output in Tableau, Excel or other software format as needed by the team.
    • Learn about the business, financial systems and billing systems and how they are linked.  Suggest solutions when there is a challenge in obtaining the necessary data for requested tasks.
    • Must be flexible to work overtime during busy compliance season or during high priority deadlines.

2015 Comcast Center Post Internship Recap

comcast_logothumb

This summer I have had the pleasure to intern with the Procurement Department of Comcast Cable Corporation for the second summer in row. Last summer I worked primarily as a fleet analyst for my dept. where I was responsible for producing inventory, maintenance, and fuel spend reports for Comcast’s inventory of 38,000 plus vehicles. I would essentially inform my manager of anything he needed to know about a certain vehicle in our inventory. Aside from this, I also created reporting of Vendor RFQs in order for management to evaluate supplier efficiencies and cost savings. I would keep track of each vendors pricing and offerings, while rating the vendor according to their qualifications for our business.

This summer I am still working on the Fleet side of Procurement, but I have also been exposed to the contract management side of the business as well. Cable has begun an initiative to review the current contract management processes and software platforms for the purpose of moving to a single managed solution that could interface with our operating system and replace the current Contract Management system in place today. My main project for the summer was to survey each of the business units on the Cable side of Comcast to gather information regarding the current system used in each department, the pain points or issues associated with the system, and the requirements for a new system from a functionality aspect so that we may begin to build the business case and payback proposal from switching to a newly proposed system. I have also been tasked with a number of other responsibilities including processing vehicle requisitions and overseeing the entire contract creation workflow from start to finish, but this overarching project has helped me to branch out of my comfort zone and interact with others on a daily basis. Through this, I have managed to create relationships with individuals and meet with a large amount of professionals in this industry from all sides of the business, including Marketing, Technical Operations, Legal, Business Services and more.

Aside from my work experiences, I have also had the opportunity to join a number of employee resource groups (ERG) including the Black Professional Alliance (BPA), and Unidos, a Hispanic/Latino ERG, where I was able to branch out and expand my professional network. Additionally I had the chance sit down and meet with numerous executives including Bret Perkins, Vice President of Government Affairs and Member of Temple University’s Board of Trustees, to learn more about their experiences, and hear their advice about working with a corporation such as Comcast. The lessons I have learned throughout this summer are extremely invaluable and the connections I have made have proved to be a huge benefit and resource with regard to new opportunities. I am happy to announce that I will be staying with Comcast Corporation in the fall and will be participating in a Cooperative Learning Experience with the Business Self Install Operations team where I will work with the department to increase the adoption of Self Install Kits (SIK) and help to manage and improve inventory management and requisition processing. This opportunity would not be possible if it weren’t for the people I have met this summer. Overall my experiences with this organization have been amazing and I am glad that I have the opportunity to remain with the company.

For more information, please see the link to a PowerPoint presentation outlining my experience this summer.

Comcast Cable, where i will be working, is the nation’s largest video, high-speed internet and phone provider to residential customers under the Xfinity brand and also provides these services to businesses as well.

As an analyst working in the fleet management sector of procurement, I will be responsible for analyzing and reporting on fuel and maintenance cost, in relation to Comcast’s 35,000+ vehicles, by pulling weekly reports from database created by Comcast’s fleet management service provider. In addition to this, I will be expected to maintain an active inventory count on the amount of vehicles in our possession, being able to manipulate excel sheets containing hundred’s of thousand’s of cells using pivot tables, vlookup functions, and descriptive statistics.
