AWS Skills Center Live: Job Roles in the Cloud – Ep.1 Cloud Support Engineer

AWS hosts a 6-episode series called “AWS Skills Center Live: Job Roles in the Cloud,” led by various experts in different fields. After my first exposure to the cloud and AWS specifically in MIS 3406, Cloud Architecture, I became interested in pursuing a career in the field–I . With this 1.5 hr webinar replay of episode one, “Cloud Support Engineer,” I will learn about the remote, technical support this career field provides to AWS customers and common issues clients face.

The webinar featured 3 AWS Cloud Support Engineers, all at various stages of their career (Level 1, Senior, and former). Panelists answered questions about the role’s scope of responsibility, how not all Cloud Support Engineers are required to be experts in the over 200 services AWS provides, but rather they are split into domains they are well-versed in, such as networking for example. The Cloud Support Engineers discussed the themes they see while troubleshooting with customers, like not fully understanding what you’re diving into. I was pleased to learn about the job’s work-life balance, where employees are encouraged to take time off and recuperate so they can show up with their 100% when it’s time to meet with a client. It was also helpful to hear about the necessity for various certifications in order to enter this career field; speakers shared their experience with studying for certifications and how the time spent learning material proved more valuable in interviews than the certifications themselves.
