This opportunity was presented to me during a course called “Data-centric Application Development,” where we learned HTML5, CSS, and PHP. Utilizing these skills learned in the classroom, A business case was provided to design and code a website from scratch for the fictional Sonny Shines Window Cleaning company. The application had to be able to calculate estimates, store customer data, and add, view and delete database entries from the site itself (for employee use).
This project taught me to create a crude website from start to finish using knowledge gained from the classroom. Even if I am not to become a web developer, having this skill can offer an advantage in many fields. For example, in cyber security, you need to understand vulnerabilities of a website or database. To truly achieve this, you need to understand how it all works so you know how to prevent things such as a SQL injection attack. This undertaking also taught me how to take initiative and truly make something of my very own.
