I think with respect to the specific advantage of older forms of music such as LPs providing high quality audio, you are referring to more of the holistic experience of listening to music. I’m not sure that to the average consumer today that this qualifies as an advantage of the older format over current media technology. With respect to the…[Read more]

I really also feel quite strongly about your use of the term investment as it is solely responsible for the enrichment and prestige of the field of practice for which we belong. Without these communities of practice in medicine, we have a far less scientific profession and ultimately less rewarding job.

Like Xiaoying, I have been a member of SGIM (Society of General Internal Medicine) as well as ACP (American College of Physicians). The domain that is common is the practice of Internal Medicine, the community is a group of board certified physicians that comes together annually and regionally more frequently to discuss advances and thoughts about…[Read more]

David Berman commented on the post, Reading Question: Disruptive Change and Book Publishing, on the site 9 years, 7 months ago
I like the general sentiment of this discussion and agree with pretty much all of the thoughts. Self-publishing has its role and has clearly become quite a disruptive technology, especially for established writers whose contracts have expired or for authors that are having difficulty achieving success through the previously available solitary…[Read more]

David Berman commented on the post, Case Question: Assessing Open Innovation at Siemens, on the site 9 years, 7 months ago
This is really a simple task to accomplish but requires diligent tracking of internally and externally developed ideas. You can easily investigate costs of development of successfully patented technologies and compare the costs to their downstream revenue development. This can be done for open innovation projects in addition to the traditional…[Read more]

David Berman commented on the post, Case Question: Open Innovation, on the site 9 years, 7 months ago
The concept of open innovations is simply that, a concept. There are many ways that it can both advantageous and disadvantageous depending on its use and the organization to which it is applied. First, open innovation still requires guidance as outlined throughout this case. It is not as though a company can say, let’s shut down our internal R&D…[Read more]

David Berman commented on the post, Case Question: Radiohead, on the site 9 years, 7 months ago
From the perspective of the record label industry, digital media has the clear advantage of sophisticated software based DRM over physical media which can be copied and distributed much more easily. This should theoretically help protect unwanted or unlawful distribution of their contractual advantage for which they have invested heavily. The…[Read more]

I also think this is a great point with regard to the future of cloud computing, but it should be re-assuring to the consumers and companies taking advantage of the technology that it is a potential safeguard against legislation that would lead to internet throttling. If large corporations are successful with respect to the business model, they…[Read more]

David Berman commented on the post, Reading Question: BYOD, on the site 9 years, 8 months ago
Temple Hospital is far behind when it comes to BYOD support in our workplace. Interestingly enough, individual productivity is only a small piece of the the puzzle and organization efficiency is hurt by the BYOD concept in our organization because the IT department lacks the ability to service personal devices and the organization mentality is to…[Read more]

David Berman commented on the post, Reading Question: Global & Information Technology, on the site 9 years, 8 months ago
Absolutely. Information technology has expedited the process of global branding dramatically through rapid transfers and exchanges of information and ideas. I’m not sure it would be fair to say though that an information technology company though is any more likely to become a global brand though than any other company, most specifically consumer…[Read more]

David Berman commented on the post, Case Question: Amazon Web Services, on the site 9 years, 8 months ago
Super succinct response couldn’t be more elegantly described. Read your response after mine, everyone said this nicely, but I particularly agree with your wording. The risk of having data in the hands of anyone else comes up in the other readings as well.

David Berman commented on the post, Case Question: Amazon Web Services, on the site 9 years, 8 months ago
Late to the game as well, but I’ll throw in my 2 cents. Simple Storage Service is a place where data can be easily stored and retrieved for cents per gigabyte of usage. Elastic Compute Cloud was essentially the same idea of storage service, but for computing on Amazon’s servers instead of a home server. Simple DB essentially was a search query…[Read more]

David Berman commented on the post, Case Question: Wyeth Global IT, on the site 9 years, 8 months ago
The global nature of the ERP system and Global Data Warehouse were influenced by regional and local politics, laws and culture with respect to their development, design and finally implementation. Wyeth struggled over nearly a decade to tailor the overall system slowly incorporating each business’ local needs. The ERP system was used as the…[Read more]

David Berman commented on the post, Case Question: Globalization and Decentralization, on the site 9 years, 8 months ago
What was the role of IT in the globalization of Wyeth? More broadly, would you say that IT-enabled globalization is simply another version of the centralization/decentralization decision that any company makes when it has multiple divisions, or is it fundamentally different? Explain.
Wyeth was already a global organization in the sense that it…[Read more]

In our medical center, our root cause analysis meetings for when an error or near error occurs involve systems thinking to try to simplify situations into it’s more basic parts and decide underlying problems for process improvements and patient safety. I can definitely imagine the loss of competitive advantage simply by picturing myself on the phone trying to finalize a quote and listening as I wait and wait for a auto finance officer to have their computer come around again. As a hospitalist, it is easy to see that the health system I work in has grossly undervalued and underinvested in information technology as a result of short sightedness of cost relative to value. The paper highlights several points about management being less effective as a result of either lack of or poorly implemented technology. This has been…[Read more]

Cataldo, I really like your description of value proposition, especially as it relates to Transplant medicine. David Berman commented on the post, Case Question: Volkswagen – Critical Unfunded Project, on the site 9 years, 8 months ago
As stated in the case analysis and most critical to the process for decision making that was implemented, the supply flow project was ranked outside of the top-most VWoA NRG goals, because it had more global impact. This low level ranking create a rapid downstream reduction in priority that ultimately allowed the project to be missed. It must also…[Read more]

I definitely agree that it is his ongoing responsibility to continue to hear out the complaints and requests of his fellow executives, and perhaps offer changes to the process to allow it to flow more smoothly and justly while maximizing corporate efficiency and profits as well as cost savings.
