– In this class I learned the impact of IT on the supply chain. I was familiar with some of the reasons how IT impacts the SC such as an eMarketplace, but others such as information delay having a large impact on inventory were very insightful.

Benefits to Zappos from Kiva:
– Allows handling of many SKU’s with minimal error through automated handling
– Lowers the cost of human labor by replacing what would normally be employees.
– Training was reduced from 4 days to 1/2 days
– Saved energy without needing use of lighting or heating/cooling

Takeaway from Crocs case:
– I learned about the advantage Crocs had over others in their supply chain, specifically with their ownership of Croslite. Owning Croslite, the manufacturing material, they are able to cut costs a lot by producing their own material instead of outsourcing it to a supplier.

The key topics I learned during the first class are:
– Supply chain does not just include materials/goods but also includes flow of information (dates/inventory levels to resupply/etc.) and financing (cash/credit owed to suppliers)
– Supply chain continuously gets cheaper with the increase in globalization. There are attempts to cut costs every year. -
