Many people use conference calling on a daily basis. It is only recently that we have been able to do video conference calling as well. But how much better would it be for us to be able to have virtual conference calling? Microsoft has announced their newest project known as HoloLens which will be a virtual reality. This will allow people “the ability to work within [their] most idealized context. Users will now be able to provide their own personalized setting during their sell of a new product, or the next big idea that they are trying to bring to their company. HoloLens will bring to life the perfect setting for different people. This could be the future of conference calling.
Discussion Questions:
1. Companies are always trying to enhance their ways of communication. Do you think they could benefit from using HoloLens when it is released? If so, how? If not, why is that?
2. Could HoloLens possibly take over conference calling entirely?
3. Would HoloLens only be beneficial to Conference calling or is there another way it could be used?
Really interesting article. I loved the comment by the author about “Trekkies and the Holodeck” because I am a Star Trek fan and can picture this device being something that could be used on a regular basis. Having the ability to sit in your office and be transported to an entirely different environment for a meeting or for a demonstration of a product is something quite useful if where you are located is rainy or snowy and the meeting can be held in a warmer environment – even if it is only in your mind for an hour or so. Definitely a novel idea.
Imagine if we were all taking this class via HoloLens instead of WebEx… Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!
HoloLens is a remarkable idea, just because it would allow individuals to enter virtual reality and locate them selves in the most soothing environment. This would definitely change the ways people interact. Although, I think this is a great idea, I’m not sure many companies would incorporate that into their communication stream, because it seems more for entertainment purpose, and would be more of a distraction if it were business related. Letting people choose their environment of where they want to be during a conference call would be unproductive because the virtual reality would overpower more focus. On the other hand, it would be extraordinary if I were able to meet in a virtual world while just having casual conversations with my friends, although even in that, there is a set back of less and less human interaction. The HoloLens is a great idea, but there are definitely pros and cons related to it.
I believe the Hololens concept is a great idea but I do not know if I believe the immediate application of such a futuristic idea will be successful or riddled with inefficiencies in the initial phase, which will probably cost early users a significant amount of money. That being said, if implemented successfully and seamlessly, at a reasonable cost, I believe the Hololens concept will most definitely takeover conference calling in corporate settings as well as social settings.
