After last night do IP Addresses mean anything more to you than before? We knew that they were your identity on the internet, but what else do they say about you? Understanding now the vast number of network c […]

Definitely yes! In the past, I had a similar network for my home. It had an easy instruction to follow it. However, I never make up a corporate network. I learned how to set up a network on the activities. For an IT auditor, it is a good experience to get IT knowledge. For people who did not have an IT background, it is also a good experience to get basic information from IT.

I have a better understanding of public IP addresses and private IP addresses . After this study, I know difference between local networks and wide area networs, such as office wifi and campus wifi. Also, I learned network hardware, such as Router, Switch, NIU. We also build our own network by using Router. Before the class, I have no idea how to set up network. I think this lecture help us to become a better IT auditor in our future career

In addition to the IP address representing the identity of the network, we can also use computer operations to give an IP to a router. This is how companies like Verizon and Comcast install home routers that give a router identity and let it access the network from the organization’s cables. In addition, each router has a paperclip, which is used to restart the router. We also learned Network Address Translation (NAT), which is used to hide node behind a router. When we turn off this function, we can “talk” with the router and do some commands.

IP Addresses always seemed like the ID number of a specific device that had access to the internet to me. After last class, I realized how you can use IP addresses to ping/perform a command. I thought that was pretty amazing! I think I will be a better IT Auditor knowing this information because it may be a shortcut to find certain information within a system or computer.

Good breakdown Jason! Thank you for contributing to the discussion!

The IP address connects the network communication between the device and the computer. Each device is assigned a local IP address to communicate with each other. It identifies the network interface of our host and provides the host’s location in the network. So Internet service providers can track the location and online activity of each device by IP address. As an IT auditor, we need to audit the Internet interface security risk audit. Thus IT auditors need to be familiar with the business systems and network components of Internet access to detect the vulnerabilities and risks involved.
-
This chapter taught us the IP addresses and the component of the network which includes Network topology, addressing and routing, for example, WANs and LANs, media access control, and network hardware. This networking lab activity makes me a deep impress about how a network work. and how and what exactly we need to set up LANs. I learned that each IP is a special identity, like a personal ID, for switch/network router to accept and recognized. LANs or WANs both need a special IP address.
This activity offers me the experience of setting up a network. And if in the future those technicals introduce these computer terms, I can understand what they’re talking about, and realize how the importance of each IP is to the computer network. -
Yes, I think understanding how corporate networks are set up will help us become better auditors. I think understanding how standard the set up usually is will help us see when errors are made or when there are oversights and omissions. Also, understadning how the networks set up IP addresses is helpful for understanding how users log into different terminals on a big network.
-
I know the difference between LAN and WAN. LAN routing is a process that each central node maintains and uses routing tables to make routing decisions. Wide area network routing (WAN) routing is a store-and-forward method used by packet routing. At the same time, this lesson also taught me how to calculate network hardware, including NIU, Hub, Bridge, Router, Switch. In addition, the lecture will explain how to create your own network, such as an introduction to network hardware and how to set up your system. Before the class started, I didn’t even know that there were different IPs between different floors.
-
public IP addresses and private IP addresses. The build a small network on our own by using a Router is a great experience to learn the set up the network and IP addresses. This lecture is a basic station and definitely helps us to become professional IT auditor in the future
-
I thought I understand IP addresses before that night but I think I understand more now as I didn’t fully understand NAT type before and why it will impact my gaming experience in different ways. The identity can also tell what device we are using. Building a network from scratch helps me understand how it works and by knowing better about the basis of the network, I can troubleshoot better if there is a network problem that I am auditing.

Hi Class, just a tip when creating VMs in Azure: Be sure to select the following ports to be open when creating the VM. Otherwise you will not be able to remote into the VM:

I think you are asking us to download the different operating systems and to use the different types of hosting technology to make us aware that there are a very wide range of configurations we can encounter as an IT Auditor. I do not think its feasible to teach us about all the different virtual machines or operating systems or cloud/locally based databases that we will audit. But you want to make sure that we are aware of the basics that make up those endless configurations so that we can figure it out once we are in the field.

This is the first time that I heard and know how to Install multiple virtual machines with different operating systems using 2 different types of virtual machines hosting technology. As a no IT background people, it is good for understanding the basic IT knowledge. Configuring 3 different types of operating systems will help my IT auditor career because I understand how to operate the operating system. If I audit different types of operating systems, I have basic knowledge of it.

We need to understand how different systems work, the similarities and differences. The companies we audit in the future may have different operating systems, such as Windows, Linux, IOS, etc.We need to learn to understand each operating system, because we may meet them. When we understand the data in each system, we can explain the problems of the system to the company or organization and make appropriate and reasonable Suggestions.According to my understanding, the command prompt in Linux is favored by many programmers, compared with the command prompt in Windows. We need to understand the basic knowledge of it, in order to better do the audit work.Installing different operating systems is also a basic knowledge that IT personnel need to learn.

The intent behind us learning to install multiple different systems and virtual machines is to aid us in knowing how to work a local domain vs. a cloud. Yes, it may be simple to just use azure and have everything in the cloud but it’s beneficial to us as growing IT Auditor to know how to maneuver different systems. I personally feel like knowing how to configure three different systems will help enable me to be a better auditor because my skills will be versatile in how to view and handle different systems.

We need to understand different systems and know how they work. In the future, we may audit different type of client and they may use different type of operation system. I think that configuring 3 different types of operating systems will ever help you become better IT Auditors. Also, command prompts in windows and Linux are favored by programmers. Therefore, it is important to learn knowledge about different operation systems. understanding the operation system is definitely worth using time, because I will understand what power and make gadget possible in today’s world.

In fact, before taking this course I learned a little bit about cloud virtual machines from video on the Internet and how to build a cloud virtual machine. But when I used VWmare to install virtual machines, I had a lot of problems and I knew that the reason was that I didn’t understand how virtual machines worked. Knowing how to set up a virtual machine is not the same as knowing why something is wrong in your virtual machine. Building virtual machines is just the beginning of our understanding of the operating system. Cloud virtual machines and downloading virtual machines locally allow us to learn about the operation of the operating system from different aspects.
Each operating system has its different advantages. When we audit information systems, we don’t always run into the same system. Understanding and building virtual machines for different systems can help us better understand the advantages and disadvantages of different operating systems.

Good post! Great breakdown of the OS.

Installing multiple virtual machines does pay a lot of effort, however, when we really using different operating system, we can learn more different computer operating system and have our own user experience and have understanding of each computer’s advantages and disadvantages. I think configuring 3 different types of operating system is helpful because we can learn different server and increase our computer knowledge.
-
I think it’s unnecessary to download different operating systems and use different types of hosting techniques, However, when I realize various configurations we might encounter as IT auditors, the question is solved which is the way to make sure us understand the basics that make up these endless configurations so we can figure them out when it happened.
-
It’s necessary to install multiple virtual machine with different operating system using different types of hosting technology as web is always available. Applications like VMware also have advantages like easier to access and run more stable. The installation on device also help us to understand the whole procedure of a system installation rather than the whole automation. MS Azure also costs more than VMware as we need to use their hardware to run Virtual Machines.
I think configuring 3 different types of operating systems help me become a better IT auditor as we might run into all kinds of OS in the future. With those experiences in hand, I can handle myself better than if I didn’t configure all of those
