As this course reminds us, a lot can and will change in 5 years! My key point would be to remind myself to use technology to embrace those changes similar to the experiences in this course. I am not particularly tech savvy, so operating in the cloud with Google Drive and using new software like Google Sheets was new for me as well as learning…[Read more]

Bruce – looks like it have evolved into a One Siemens framework (below are links to Siemens One in 2008 and the recent framework- interesting that their still seems to be deep silos despite these…[Read more]

Congratulations, Sam! Enjoy these years, even though you probably aren’t getting much sleep right now, they go by in the blink of an eye.

Hi Elaine – My feelings were mixed on the Mock Interview because so many students needed improvement but I think the constructive criticism will help them in the long-run. One student told me she wished she had gone through this before a real interview the week before. It’s funny you mention common sense, Elaine – one student didn’t wear a tie,…[Read more]

Hi Bruce – Thanks , I will answer the best I can with the caveat that it’s been 10 years so much may have changed (although from reading the case not too much). Within the financial accounting systems we had “project codes” set up upon project approval to capture costs across lines of business and legal entities. It’s not a formal…[Read more]

Hi Duke – I think Lackner was just trying to justify the program from a different direction by looking at the impact of losing the value (current and future) provided by open innovation (ie – look at all we would be losing if we stopped). I’m with you and Steve on needing the metrics to build the case and tap into the silos irrespective of…[Read more]

Hi Bruce – I think you and others here are spot on with the power of open innovation to develop the ideas in a focused way to ensure success. When you talk about the “power of all those minds” it heightens the importance of what was said in the Siemens case – “If Siemens only knew, what Siemens knows”. The sad part is that internally we were…[Read more]

Kevin – Wow – that is taking it to a whole other level that I quite frankly think is nuts. I understand their desire to treat like fine art but even that is shared and displayed for others to enjoy. I think they are taking the artist thing a bit far and I don’t think this will be disruptive to the industry. In 88 years they will be dead and then…[Read more]

Hi LeRena – It’s a shame that people have to almost dedicate the amount of time spent on a full-time job to navigate the waters and get their works published. The creative end should be the hard part, not finding a way to get your message out there. I think the societal contribution and sense of self-fulfillment that brings, as evidenced by your…[Read more]

I don’t think the age of agents and publishers is dead because it so difficult to handle the marketing, selling and other aspects as many have detailed in their posts. A friend of mine wrote a book and was rejected for years but finally was finally able to get a deal with Crossroad Press for his fantasy fiction novel Quest of the Thirteen. It…[Read more]

The case was very interesting for me as I worked for Siemens from 1997-2005 and was Controller for Siemens Financial Services, North America (the central division mentioned on page 2) for the majority of that time. Much may have changed in the 10 years since I left, but it sounds like the silo mentality encountered by the CT unit in trying to…[Read more]

Advantages of digital media over physical media for record labels include easier and faster distribution of music, effective new targeted marketing programs tailored for the rising digital customer segment, and the ability to increase market share based on penetration opportunities within digital channels. The labels were resistant due to overall…[Read more]

I hear you loud and clear Alex – we need to work in the cloud while flying above them:) I’m in for the group assignment – maybe we can get extra credit from Fox or it can be in lieu of the capstone project 🙂 .

Thanks, Bruce. I guess now the pressure is really on to write something that makes sense in my posts:) I love your house analogy – thinking about what can be going on behind those closed doors is scary even if they meet required third party servicer standards. I guess I am a “trust but verify” person – especially in light of all the security…[Read more]

Hi Joel – I agree with you but it’s funny that you reference BoA since we were very happy when in 2011 they the led the way with a $5 monthly debit card fee in response to regulatory changes impacting their revenues. We and other banks were able to pounce on that and take a good chunk of their customers (account closures went up 20% year over…[Read more]

Hi Elaine – yes TD does have to approve the device being used but it just has to be a device that works with any of BlackBerry OS 10.2, Apple iOS 6.01, Android 4.0 or a newer version of these operating systems.
I understand the concern about employee’s switching off but I think that can be influenced by the company’s culture and how they…[Read more] -
Paul Young commented on the post, Reading Question: BYOD, on the site 9 years, 8 months ago
Hi Kristin – I can relate to where you are coming from when it comes to wanting to segregate personal devices from work. At TD, we subsidize the cost of the services for employees on their personal device (since they also use for work) and that has helped drive increased adoption. I like your point on the family/work balance – can be tough to…[Read more]
