MIS 2502: E-Portfolio Assignment
NoSQL
NoSQL is translated into “not only sql”, being non-relational, distributed, open-source and horizontally scalable. This system resolves big data performance and accessibility issues from relational databases with a range of technologies and architectures. In NoSQL databases, data can be inserted without a predefined schema. This capability simplifies application changes in real-time, in turn generating faster development, reliable code integration, and reduced time for a database administrator. NoSQL databases split data across multiple servers without requiring applications to be responsive of the configuration of the server pool, otherwise denoted as “auto-sharding”. Auto-sharding allows a server to be quickly and transparently replaced with no application disruption when the server is down, promoting reliability. Enterprises utilize NoSQL for sustainability and efficiency with the emerging trends of Big Users, Big Data, the Internet of Things, and Cloud Computing.
In MIS 2502, students are introduced to the Structured Query Language, referred to as SQL, and the relational database. SQL is a high-level set of commands that lets users communicate with the database. This communication involves retrieving records, joining tables, inserting records, deleting records, updating records, and adding/deleting tables. NoSQL databases do not entirely prohibit SQL, nor necessarily implement the SQL standard. Instead, each work with managed data in a unique language. NoSQL was pioneered to reduce the issues found in relational databases and SQL queries to improve data exploration and implementation.
Google, Facebook, Amazon, LinkedIn and similar leading internet companies developed NoSQL to encompass modern web applications without the limitations of long-standing relational database technology. Popular NoSQL databases include Apache Cassandra, SimpleDB, Google BigTable, MongoDB, Apache Hadoop, and MapReduce. Apache Cassandra, born at Facebook and built on Amazon’s Dynamo and Google’s BigTable, is a distributed storage system for managing massive amounts of structured data spread out across several commodity servers. This system is used at large companies such as Apple, Comcast, Instagram, Spotify, eBay, Rackspace, and Netflix.
