Target Case Competition 2017

In this challenge, my team consulted Target Corp. on how best to leverage their Cartwheel coupon app to increase customer satisfaction, boost employee engagement, and drive top revenue growth. Out solution focuses on the improvement regarding product development, price and promotion.

You can view the summary below or access our full report here.

Summary:

Product Development:

  • Improve the user interface:
    • Increase the attractiveness by adjusting the colors of the app to suit Target’s CIP.
    • Relocate tabs for better navigation.
  • Incorporate additional features:
    • Personalization: Add optional questions about age, occupation, hobbies, etc. to gather information that could make coupons suggestion more accurate for each user.
    • Feedback Tab: For user to rate their experience and comment about aspects of the coupons that they want to improve.
    • Target Stories: For user to record their shopping journey and share those with other shoppers.
    • Bulleyes’ Chat box: For user to interact with Target’s mascot Bulleyes

Pricing Strategies:

  • Follow “Quality exceeds quantity” motto.
  • Promote users higher-value coupons, specifically 10 to 15 percent off for a duration of 3 to 5 days, to provoke incentives for consumers to visit Target and get to know the app.
  • Initiate Target Coupon Day, a monthly event for Cartwheel’s users to earn 5 percent off the overall purchase.
  • Offer coupons for items that are usually bought together.

Promotion:

  • Build a reward system for loyal customers.
  • Boost in-store advertising, such as placing posters at self-checkout locations and price-check machines.
  • Place products that are on-sale in more visible areas.
