MIS Coursework

MIS 0855 – Data Science

Although a Science GenEd requirement, Data Science plays an important role in igniting my passion for technology and making me declare MIS as my major. Through this course, I familiarize myself with how data is stored, organized, and analyzed, and how organizations can benefit from the use of data. In addition, I get the chance to play around with Tableau and learn how to create meaningful and persuasive visualizations with the software.

MIS 2502 – Data Analytics

The course provides a foundation to designing database systems and analyzing business data. I learn how to perform SQL queries to extract information from transactional databases and create new databases from the data given. Moreover, the course involves the use of Rstudio, a statistical software through which I utilize different data mining techniques such as clustering, segmentation, association and decision trees to find patterns that yield meaningful information and enhance the decision making process.

MIS 3406 – Enterprise IT Architecture

This course is by far my most favorite and also the most challenging one. Running across the time span of the course are Tech Challenges, in which I get to use Microsoft Azure cloud computing platform to manage virtual machines, build networks, monitor alerts and install web servers.

Taking MIS 3406 also allows me to develop the ability to quickly analyze situations and communicate information in a timely and easy-to-understand manner. For our Flash Research Assignments, I play the role of an IT Manager who want to persuade the CIO into investing in new technologies, and therefore, have to came up with one-page summaries of what those technologies are, what their key capabilities are, and how they can help solve the business cases presented. Being an international student whose first language is not English, at first it was a little challenging. However, constant practices eventually improve my research and writing skills, and I am able to meet the high expectation of this class.

Learning outside of just whiteboards, papers, and software is also very important. My classmates and I are given the opportunities to build a computer from hardware and get an in-depth look into our university’s data center facilities.

Other Impactful Coursework

SGM 0827 – Creativity & Organizational Innovation

The purpose of this course is to equip students with important life skills and foster creativity in organizational settings. I get to know how startups are built from the ground up through engaging in group discussions on various topics and practice design thinking through building collaborative models.

For the final project of this class, I collaborate with 2 other teammates to develop a Kickstarter campaign to promote a novel product/idea that is economically, socially and environmentally sustainable. Our idea is CusCake, an app that provides customized-dessert buying and selling experience for both customers and freelance bakers.

You can check out our website to learn more about the product.

MTKG 3508 – Digital Marketing

This course explores the use of information and communication technology by firms and consumers, and challenges students to critique and utilize digital tools, including social media platforms, online reviews, paid search, digital and programmatic advertising, search engine optimization, email marketing, mobile marketing and online promotions. I familiarize myself with critical metrics of measuring digital campaigns’ effectiveness, as well as tools such as SEMrush, Google AdWords, and Google Analytics.

A highlight from this course is my team’s digital branding project for a live client – Humble Dumplings. As the SEO manager of this project, I am responsible for performing content audits, conducting keyword research, and backlink analysis to evaluate and improve the performance of the food vendor’s website. My contribution, as a result, helps increase the website rankings on 2 search engines (Google and Bing) by an average of 14 positions, and drive in-store sales for our client.
