My most important takeaway from this class was how to utilize data that is gathered, by entering it into a data base, storing it, and transforming it. Another important takeaway was pulling data from a database by using SQL language. In future interviews, I can now explain to potential employers that I have abilities to take their data and…[Read more]

Grocery stores can collect data during the Thanksgiving season to see which days are the busiest shopping days and which store locations get the most traffic. They can create clusters on what days have the most traffic on a calendar and which areas on a map have the most traffic. From this data they can ensure that they order the correct amount…[Read more]

A business question that could be answered using a decision tree is “Which track will an advertising student choose?” A decision tree could help a university, such as temple, determine which classes a track a student will decide on in their sophomore year. From this the university can determine how many teachers to hire, classes to run, etc. The…[Read more]

The business question I answered is: “What is the average wait time to schedule an appointment with a doctor at a practice?” The dimensions would be: date called to make an appointment, date of available appointment scheduled, doctor appointment is scheduled with. The measured facts would be date of the call, date of the appointment, and name of…[Read more]

One way that data could be stored differently is on standardized testing formats such as a scantron. They list names Las Name then First Name and they are in separate boxes. However, on a hardcopy test most students would write their name First Name then Last Name in one section, By using a CONCATENATE formula, one could rearrange the data to…[Read more]

I think that this is a good example of data visualization because you can understand the graphic without having to read too much into it. The changing sizes and percentages over the materials makes it easy to understand the change over time as the timeline…[Read more]

As an e-board member for Temple’s PRSSA chapter, I assist with recruitment of new members and their registration. We have tables with information about what class a student was in when they showed interest in PRSSA by signing up for our email list to come to meetings. We also have lists that are students who paid dues to join. In order to find out…[Read more]

What I find the trickiest about creating an ERD from a problem description is the cardinality. It is easier to find the different entities and their attributes because it is stated in the problem description, but the cardinalities are not always explicitly written. My advice would be to first go through the problem description and plug in the…[Read more]

Over the summer I worked at a PR agency. Part of my job was working on social media accounts using paid ads on Instagram. After the ads were promoted the Instagram software would provide data that showed how many people interacted with the post, liked and commented on the post, and followed the links on the post to the company website. We found…[Read more]
