Wal-Mart has a competitive advantage over their competition because of their unique philosophy in addition to how they utilize their information system personnel: “The first philosophy is to run a centralized information system for our operations all over the world, and we run that from Arkansas. The second is to have common systems and common platforms. The third is to be merchants first and technologists second. Also, in any development effort, our information system personnel are expected to get out and do the function before they do the system specification, design or change analysis. The key there is to do the function, not just observe it. So we actually insert them into the business roles”
1. Is Wal-Mart’s use of their information system the reason why they are the number one retailer?
2. Without their information system and knowledgeable IS personnel could Wal-Mart be a competitor in the retail industry?
3. Has the manner in which Wal-Mart has implanted there IS improved their value chain?

According to the article, more companies allow and even encourage employees to use their own phones and tablets for work activities, often referred to as “bring your own device,” or BYOD, an unexpected consequence has arisen for workers who have seen their devices wiped clean—remotely and with little or no advance warning—during or after employment by firms looking to secure their data.

DIGITAL DIVIDE: WHAT CAN BE DONE ABOUT IT???
The digital divide is becoming a greater issue in cities across the country due to our fast growing digital society. How can we lessen the digital divide, or is the digital divide the inevitable in our society today? Read this article and answer these three questions. RISE OF INTERNET LEARNING CREATES DIGITAL DIVIDE
- Should city/state and or the federal government make it a top priority to provide low-income families with school aged children free or low-income internet access and lap tops/PC’s?
- Temple University recycles computers and sells them to students/employees for a minimal cost. Should Temple University expand the sale of the recycled computers to the surrounding community as a way of helping the digital divide?
- Kevin Hart donated 500 computers to Philadelphia’s schools and recreation centers. What can we do to bring awareness to the cause of digital divide so that people like Kevin Hart will take note of the need in this digital society and give back to the cities inner city schools, recreation centers and libraries?

Which Side of the Digital Divide Will You End Up On?
Which side of the divide will you end up on? What are you willing to do to insure that? Just because you will have a college degree doesn’t mean that you’ll end up on the side you expect! If you do not make a conscious decision about this, make plans and take action, you will be very disappointed in the not too distant future.
