Every year it seems that a new streaming service comes out, with a different set of films and tv shows. On the top of that, each streaming service keeps producing incredible amounts of content, not necessarily good content though. We’ve all had moments when we just couldn’t decide which new show to start watching, so the obvious choice was to rewatch The Office for the 10th time. Unfortunately, most streaming services don’t hold all your favorite movies and tv shows and often lose the rights to them and have to remove those films and shows from their streaming platform. To make things worse, once Disney launches their streaming service, it is very likely that no other streaming platform will have their movies for much longer.
Originally, streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime Video were great alternatives for cable subscription because they were cheaper and more convenient to have. These days, due to price increases, movie and tv shows rights holding and original content produced by those platforms, some families spend $100 to $200 a month on subscriptions. The convenience is still there, although slightly diluted, since different services hold different movies and shows, however, the costs are starting to add up.
With so much content coming out every day, on so many different platforms, it’s hard to stay up to date on everything that is being produced and consumers start to suffer from content overload and fatigue. Too much choice can be a really bad thing and could drive consumers to either watch the same shows/movies or go to a different platform altogether. I think that in the near future, we will see some more consolidation in the streaming market. On the top of that, there has been an increase in piracy and illegal streaming again, after it was largely cut when the first streaming services arrived. I think we are at the point where people are getting tired of having to sign up for another streaming service and would just prefer to either have free access or have a consolidated paltform with all of their favorite choices, rather than many platforms with excessive amounts of irrelevant content.
