Digital Leader Fireside Chat: Larry Dignan

  1. Title of the activity: Digital Leader Fireside Chat: Larry Dignan
  2. Term of the activity: Fall 2020
  3. Name of sponsoring organization: IBIT
  4. Details of the activity (e.g., where, when): Zoom, 11/19/2020, 12pm-1pm
  5. What you learned: I learned about how flexibility is a very important skill to have when working in the tech industry and that muscle memory comes along with the job. As you progress and learn new tools you would learn through doing, but being able to adjust to each new and emerging technology is the key skill to have. Larry also spoke briefly about the transition from moving to a strictly online environment and compared his experience with two different companies he worked for. Depending on how capable the company is would determine how efficient and seamless the transition it is. At his previous company he stated that it was a mess basically and because that, COVID-19 caused great issues, while training and such at his new company felt as if nothing has ever happened since the pandemic.
  6. How the activity relates to coursework or your career goals: I would say learning to be flexible is something I would want to get better at for my career and academic goals. Being able to adjust to new languages and new technology is going to be vital to my career choice. I wish to work with data and I know I need to know many tools ranging from SQL to noSQL and just anything else really.
