Freshly Picked

freshlypicked-1024x524

How much food do you throw away in a week? Have you ever come home from night class and have no idea what you have in your fridge, or what to make for dinner? Well if you use Freshly Picked, we could tell you!

Freshly Picked is an end to end Kitchen Management System. We monitor the supply, production, and delivery of every item that comes in and goes out of your kitchen. Using predictive analytics combined with personal preferences to create shopping lists, inventory plans, and recipes geared to maximize the efficiency of your kitchen. By doing this, our app helps consumers reduce food spend, food waste, and helps them achieve their dietary goals.

One thing I have learned through this project is the need to distinguish between requirements and “nice to have’s.” Initially when we were playing with the idea of a Kitchen Management System, there was so much we could do with it. We could tell you where all the discounts were, we could tell you how to make your girlfriend’s favorite dish based on your relationship status on Facebook and relevant social media posts. The point is, we could really use any amount of personal information, combined with transactional data at the grocery store to provide you with a large variety of reports. Although it took quite some time, we were able to really hone down on three fundamental questions we wanted to ask the user: where to buy? what to buy? and what to make? Using these three questions as our fundamental requirements, we were able to capture the “production lifecycle” of an item in the kitchen. This way, we were tailor the app to maximize both the inputs and outputs of these questions to provide information to the user.

I hope to take this app public someday. I believe there is much potential for data integration, and using both transactional data and metadata to make intelligent business decisions.
