Time Frame: Fall 2014

Project SHINE focuses on helping immigrant elders prepare for citizenship, work, acquire health literacy skills, and engage in meaningful civic roles. The benefits of SHINE as a service learning model goes beyond academic content, as SHINE students gain a wider perspective of their world and a deeper understanding of themselves.
Working through Project SHINE, I worked directly with the Southeast Asian Mutual Assistance Associations Coalition (SEAMAAC). I participated as a volunteer English teacher with SEAMAAC for four weeks, and led classroom sessions with adult immigrants to help build and refine their language skills.
