Digital Leader Fireside Chat with Luke Olenoski
On 03/24, I attended the IBIT fireside chat with Luke Olenoski via Zoom. His presentation discussed two main questions: 1. Did the pandemic change health systems technology? 2. What is temporary and what will last? First he spoke about how healthcare has changed as a business. The system, which was used to making decisions over time, had to adapt to make very important decisions quickly due to the ever changing nature of the pandemic. Then he dove into two questions- how does this effect healthcare? and what does this mean to us as students and professionals? He also described his own personal experience with starting a new job in a new industry in a global pandemic, and offered tips and advice. His four main points were, bet on yourself, there will be a good chance the technology will be the easy part so worry about the other aspects of the job as well, doubt is natural so invest in a support system, and never underestimate importance of getting to the front line. He did so by explaining how these tips helped him in his new journey in the healthcare industry, and providing us with specific examples.
Although I’m not interested in working specifically in healthcare, this was an eye opening presentation in regards to living during a global pandemic and starting new positions during this time. I liked learning about how rapidly and dramatically the healthcare has been changing within the past year and what changes Luke thought would have a lasting impact on the industry in the future. Also, this summer I will be interning at a FinTech company, and I know Luke’s advice for starting a new job during a pandemic will help me be confident and prepared when beginning this new online position.
