Women in Data Science Confrence

I attended the day long Women in Data Science Conference on March 8th organized by Vanguard via Zoom. The day consisted of a  Keynote speaker, 3 applied technical talks, 3 speakers/panels, and a final meet and greet. The Keynote speaker Nelly Akoth talked about her experiences with data science and changes in technology today. Dr. Jaclyn Taroni, Dr. Eleni Anni, and Karen Etchberger spoke about understanding and preventing diseases through research and data on these diseases. Logan Wilt and Dr. Jane Greenberg then discussed t the challenges of data science and how tp overcome them in their panel. In the first applied technical talk Dr. Pallavai Chitturi, a Temple Statistical Science Professor, taught about discrete choice experiments and how to apply them to data privacy. Next, Karly Jerman talked about her experience at Vanguard in the Investment Management Fintech Strategies Group. This was especially interesting to me because I will be interning with a FinTech company this summer and it was great to learn about the projects she was working on. Then, Tegan Bunsu, a developer for the 76ers, spoke about data science in the basketball industry and showed different data visualizations used in analyzing different players. Finally, Stacey Mosley spoke on the Philadelphia Startup Scene and the different data science roles in startups. Finally, the day closed with the attendees being put into small breakout rooms for a networking meet and greet.

I really enjoyed hearing about all of these amazing women’s different experiences in data science. They all had such unique positions within the industry and insights to share with us. I loved learning about so many new paths within and applications of data science, and being exposed to concepts I didn’t even know existed. This conference taught me so much and made me excited to be a part of my major and the data science community!
