Fireside Chat with Larry Dignan
This event on November 18th was a fireside chat with Larry Dignan called “Careers in the Context of Remote Work” held over Zoom.I have Professor Dignan for MIS 0885 and it was very interesting to hear him talk about topics we usually dont cover in class. First, he went over the good news and bad news about moving online. In short, he thinks online is positive because it allows for mobility within your job, and the ability to work from any location for any company around the world. However, the lack of culture and difficulty of group work or social connections in addition to employees becoming tired out are all negatives about this online migration. He also said since organization structures are becoming flatter, there is more of a need for middle managers. Next he explained how jobs in user/ customer / employee experience is a good option to get in because of the need for human thought and knowledge in this position. He also pointed out that now more than ever, data matters in every aspect of a company. Lastly, he spoke about how now employees are on a more level playing field because over Zoom anyone could ask a question or talk to any level of manager they choose to.
I will take all of this information and learn from what Professor Dignan has said. I feel more knowledgeable about working on this new digital world. I also learned the many pros that come out of moving online (since it could be natural to focus on the negatives). But now I know I can use this climate to my advantage and also have advice on what types of positions to look for in an organization if I dont want to lose my job to automation.
