Agree, Ryann. If the members of the ELT thought their projects should be prioritized more highly, they should have ensured that the goals of the projects were aligned to the strategic goals of VWoA. The idea of the project selection process isn’t to be fair to separate business units, it is to maximize the value to VWoA. The whole issue could be…[Read more]

The new process for managing priorities at VWoA was clearly superior to the old one. In any project management setting, there must be some sort of scoring system so that projects can be compared to one another. The top 5 infrastructure projects may all be more valuable to the growth of VWoA than the best marketing project. Although some business…[Read more]

Adam Moyer commented on the post, Case Question: Volkswagen – Critical Unfunded Project, on the site 9 years, 8 months ago
It’s possible that a “critical” project can be unfunded when subsidiary goals are not aligned with the corporate parent. This can happen quite often in multinational corporations. Back in our global strategy course, we saw this issue with Procter and Gamble, where the country teams were more powerful and had P&L responsibility versus their product…[Read more]

It’s hard to determine whether a company is over-investing or under-investing in information technology, unless the return is being measured, whether through standard methods such as ROI, or other measures like ROM or ABM discussed in the text. That said, I believe the company I work for currently slightly under-invests in technology.
Based on…[Read more]

At Planalytics, we help retailers and manufacturers understand how weather impacts consumer demand for their products. As a B2B intelligence provider, our value proposition involves three areas: cost reduction, revenue generation, and risk reduction.
Improving forecasts for consumer demand reduce costs in several areas associated with the…[Read more]

Adam Moyer commented on the post, Case Question: Airbnb — "EJ" Incident, on the site 9 years, 8 months ago
“If you were a crisis consultant, what advice would you give to Airbnb on how to handle incidents like this?”
The first step for Airbnb is to have a crisis management plan in place to respond incidents. The plan would include a well-organized communication plan, both internally to the renter and host, as well as externally to the media and…[Read more] -

“What do you think Sunnylake should do now? Would you make the same recommendation to your manager if all of your office was locked out of its computer systems?”
I agreed mostly with Richard Nolan’s assessment of the situation. Layman first and foremost needs to communicate both with his team and the outside world. Obviously, his doctors are…[Read more]

“Have advances in technology made it easier to commit fraud? Or, has technology made it easier to keep your money safe?”
I think without question, technology has made it easier to commit fraud. Before credit cards in the 70s and 80s, you would almost have to give someone money for them to take advantage of you (e.g., pyramid schemes). Then, in…[Read more]

I’ve not used Airbnb before and I think I’m less likely to use it after reading this week’s case studies. While there are similarities to the Uber business case, the invasion of privacy and lack of supervision raise bigger concerns with Airbnb. While I applaud the efforts to bring travelers needing rooms and potential vacancies together, since it…[Read more]

Nice reply, Mike. This brings up a lot of ethical questions for me. At some level, there’s the whole “what are you worried about if you nothing to hide” argument. But at the same time, I’d be less likely to use a service that required that level of information from me, when I could just use a hotel instead. Obviously, you’re taking greater risks…[Read more]

Nice post, Mike. I agree with you – I’ve used Uber a number of times with only positive experiences. In fact, I’ve never heard of any negative experiences from any of my friends. It’s cool to see that you’ve actually asked drivers of their opinions, as well – though I’d have assumed with the quick proliferation of the service, many more Uber…[Read more]

I think the more concerning part, in your example, is if Johnny wants the truck company to pay him to allow you to play with his truck. Yelp, in theory, is a way to crowdsource information about restaurants, grocery stores, etc., but that breaks down if they are only allowing favorable comments for retailers that are willing to advertise on Yelp…[Read more]

My favorite gadget is my Pebble watch. In my opinion, it was the first piece of wearable technology that was actually functional. For me it serves two purposes: 1. as a meteorologist, the weather apps are solid, providing me local conditions (including esoteric scientific ones that only interest weather nerds like me) and forecasts, linked to my…[Read more]
