I think this idea can be a huge hit because it will lessen the workload of employees in Mattel and Autodesk and reduce risk. Before this innovation, companies had to think creatively to develop toys that they felt would appeal to kids. With this service, toy companies can observe 3-D printing toy trends and then base their next product off of…[Read more]

I too am surprised about the volume of Apple watches that sold after only 1 day. While these watches are definitely popular, I don’t think they will be a substitute product because of the lack of size and battery strength. All of the watches capabilities such as texting, e-mailing, listening to music, social media, reading the news, and…[Read more]

On March 13, 2015, I received a job offer from UnitedHealth Group to take part in the company’s technology development program. I was excited to accept this offer and look forward to contributing to the company starting on June 22. While in this rotational program, I will take on various roles including: business analyst, systems analyst, and application developer. While under each role, I will have a mentor guiding me along the way and making sure that I am comfortable with my responsibilities. After the 13-month program has come to an end, management will decide which role I fit best in and contribute most to the company. All in all, I am very excited to have landed a role within such a great company and am excited to begin my professional career

When I first read this post, it sounded as if this device was fairly similar to Google Chromecast and I did not understand the differences. After reading further, I found that the Chromebit is packaged with 16GB of solid state storage memory and 2GB of RAM. With this being said, I think these devices can be a major hit in businesses such as…[Read more]

Bakari Malik commented on the post, Apple is Reinventing TV. Why didn’t the cable companies?, on the site 9 years, 7 months ago
While I’d like to believe that cable companies could currently compete with internet protocol television, I do not think Generation Y is interested in being overwhelmed with channels that they do not watch. While many people assume that Millennials fear committing to a subscription based pay, Forbes reported that nearly 31% from non-TV households…[Read more]

Bakari Malik commented on the post, Is Apple pay a disruptive innovation failure ? , on the site 9 years, 7 months ago
I also think it is way to early to denounce Apple Pay as a failure. The main reason I feel that the service is off to such a slow start is that it is only compatible with the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus models. Many consumers are still under contract with earlier models of the Apple iPhones and haven’t had the opportunity to commit to Apple…[Read more]

I take Uber and other cab services regularly and think there are several flaws within the organization that regulations will have to try to resolve. For many businesses, the performance review is just as awkward for company managers than it is for the employee. Furthermore, evidence shows that performance reviews have a limited effect. According to Mercer’s 2013 Global Performance Management Study, only 3% of organizations say their reviews are effective, while 48% say their overall approach to performance needs improvements. Because of this, Adobe’s businesses moved to a cloud based software that eliminated the annual process of evaluating past performances and comparing employees against one another. Because of this real-time service , the new Check-In Adobe software allows employees and managers to send feedback to each other as they accomplish their goals instead of forcing managers to look back on the task months afterwards. Employees are also evaluated based on what they achieved against their goals and not compared to their peers. There is a framework set up by managers of all their responsibilities and employees can comment and how they are managing their responsibilities while they are in the process of completing them. Adobe has saved approximately 80,000 hours because they are no longer conducting performance reviews. I think this is a great idea to help the efficiency of management performance reviews because the business is better able to understand how beneficial certain projects are since they are leaving remarks immediately after the project is completed. It also helps employees better understand the contributions that they are making to the company and shows if they are meeting their requirements. Using this approach, employees can look at their log in the cloud based service and decide if they are meeting expectations before they are questioned or criticized by a manager. With all of this being said, how do you feel about this approach? Are there any cons?
-
I would have to agree with your first statement about performance reviews being awkward. As a whole I think performance reviews are pretty ineffective, unless both the manager and the employee are dedicated to them and also if a good performance review structure is already set in place by the organization. However, I do believe that performance reviews are very critical and I think this check-in adobe software is an effective way to improve the performance review structure for an organization. Making these reviews real time allows for better communication among managers and employees, if there is an issue it will be much easier to improve on. This approach could also encourage managers and employees to be more accurate with reviews especially because it is a two way feedback system. While, I can’t necessarily think of any cons to this approach, I can think of cons of an organization. So even if this approach is in place, because of the organizational culture and the mix of individuals on a project it might not be very successful. For instance, while a good manager would appreciate employee feedback and take it into consider, a bad manager would get annoyed and possibly react poorly to the feedback. Overall, I think this is a very effective to structure performance reviews, but I also think it needs to be accepted by the right organization.
-
It makes sense that performance reviews are becoming more and more personalized. Real time feedback is what people need to grow; why wait so long to provide it? This new system will accelerates growth, which is best for employees and the company. Great article Bakari!

I think a risk of integrative thinking could be that it could take longer for decisions to be made because you are looking at several different perspectives and asking questions to gain a better understanding. I found this post very interesting, but I cannot think of any integrative business models that flopped. However, I’m sure as more and more people adaptive the integrative thinking thought process, there will become more and more business models that flop since people and businesses are still learning.

During this week in class, we learned about disruptive innovations and the impact that they have had on organizations throughout the world. The technologies radically change the way in which a company profits and conducts their business. While there are many examples of disruptive technologies that have been successful, this article highlights the flaws and setbacks that these technologies have presented businesses. The article points out that disruptive innovations often do not immediately appeal to the target market and are often released prematurely. The business often suffers a set back before they reap any benefits if they do at all. Another problem is that disruptive technologies are usually not produced from large corporations because these companies do not want to take that risk and are comfortable with sustaining technologies. Because of this, consumers are often hesitant to jump aboard disruptive technologies. With all of this being said, are there any instances in which you can think of a disruptive technology that failed? Do you have any ideas for how disruptive innovations can have a better chance of being launched successfully?
-
I did a little research to find any potential disruptive innovations that failed and I came across Polavision. Everyone is probably familiar with Polaroid and back in the 1970s the company attempted to expand into the video systems industry. At that point, the industry was shifting past Super 8 cameras into newer technologies. Polaroid’s Polavision had been in development for over a decade, but in the end, it became a massive failure. The user could only record for around two minutes and there was no sound to the video. The company had to write off the entire project and it created a deep hole for Polaroid from which they never recovered. This was an interesting example of an established company trying to break into a new industry but, instead, self imploding in the process.

I did not consider accessibility as such a needed skill, but it makes sense the more I think about it. At my internship over the summer, I think accessibility made all the difference. For certain tasks, if my manager was busy, I had to guess about certain parts of the work I was doing. If my manager was available, it was easy for me to ask him questions about how something should be done or the adequacy of my work.
-
I do agree that become a good manager is always hard and how important is to have a good teamwork. In BA 4101 class, there is one group assignments called group memo and it needs a lot of teamwork. I tried to manage all the group meetings and lead the discussion but one person was always missing. So I wrote the impolite email to that person and I asked someone to take care of that person. Apparently, I was wrong how I approached to her after that person talked with my other group member. She started to participated in group discussion and did all her parts on time. I realized that we all are good at something and by putting it together, this makes a great team.

In last week’s class, we discussed companies that went through transformations and briefly mentioned Apple’s Itunes Store. According to Business Insider, Itunes accounted for rougly $8 billion in annual revenues for the company in 2013. Although this is the case, the revenue stream from iTunes has been flat even after the company has produced 75 million new iOS devices. Over four quarters, iTunes revenue only went from $1.9 billion to $2.1 billion even though the company increased the amount of iOS devices by more than 150 million. Although iPhones continue to profit, Androids are heavily demanded and becoming a rival. While Apple is valued at nearly $730 billion, what can the brand do to continue its success? Should it appeal to the company to transform the business again?
