Thanks for posting this article:
Complacency is a serious issue when trying to enforce physical security with security guards. The problem with security guards is they are human, they get bored, they get complacent and unless there’s something that makes them “get on their toes,” like pressure from higher management or an actual threat, they would not take it seriously. Even during my time in the military, I’ve seen duty officers falling asleep while on duty or not checking Id’s when required. It gets a little more difficult when you factor in union laborers, which makes it extremely difficult to reprimand for non-performance.

Good article, its straight to the point and shows why physical security is an important factor when it comes to cyber security. Once someone gains access to a building mischief can began. You’re only as strong as your weakest link. No matter how great your IT infrastructure is, someone gaining access to a secure area can easily take down your network and cause chaos.

Thanks for sharing this Brent. Let’s sign this student up for the ITACS program!
Hopefully this student’s efforts and the recent attacks on campus are a good reminder of the importance of strong physical security measures on campus.
-
Not surprising, I don’t spend much time on campus but I see the same faces posted at the same entrances and they never seem happy or engaged. While its hard to tell students apart from someone who may be looking to do something bad they will hopefully stop someone who erratic or totally out of place. But I think this type of security is also more of a deterrent than anything else.

Brent Easley commented on the post, “Public Wi-Fi Use Grows, Despite Security Risks”, on the site 8 years ago
It wasn’t until I was in this program that I didn’t realize or thought that public hot spots were not safe. I have a totally different outlook on what networks I connect to when I am out. It seems like that organizations need to strengthen their security and strengthen type of encryption that is used for Wi-Fi.

it sounds like these banks need to update their software on the ATM to stop them from using malware to make the money come out (jackpotting) I have never heard of this, I wonder will these cyber criminals attempt to do this on ATM in the US.

This rooting flaw is definitely a tough one for Linux users. Besides us using in virtual environment, many large organizations deploy Linux servers to run critical web, applications, databases, and so on.
Great article and thanks for sharing.-

Great article, but this seems to good to be true. I don’t believe anything is hack proof, the hackers just haven’t found a way to find the vulnerabilities yet!!.

Yes they are attempting to make strides and President Obama signed a bill to update the systems of the government, but it seems like it has been happening too much while he has been in office. The next President needs to make this a top priority protecting the confidential information of the citizens of the United States.

That is not good news. Luckily it was a “disruptive” attack instead of a “destructive” attack. Hacking nuclear plants can endanger a whole country. Hopefully they are taking the steps to secure their infrastructure to protect them from hackers.

Yes, people will always be the number one risk. You can run 1,000,000 background checks and if that person decides to go rogue you will be in trouble.

Brent, this just goes to show you that no matter how safe you are with securing, or attempting to secure, information, the number 1 risk is people. While screenings and background checks can help, there is no sure fire way to ensure people won’t do unethical or illegal things.

I need to follow that line of thinking. Give them some time to work out the kinks of the latest IOS and send the latest security patches.

Brent, love this article. The law is always trying to catch up with technology!! Just the nature of the beast. I remember all the controversy surrounding issues such as wireless, VOiP, etc. Is that wire taping, isn’t it? With technology changing so quickly, and law evolving so slowly, there is always going to be that gap!

I am wondering how this could be done without anybody noticing this. When I saw this on the news I was shocked that this was happening. If they have individuals make phony bank accounts, then how can we have faith in them to protect our money.
