Over the past ten years, Facebook has been developing a social network for enterprise. FB@Work hopes to encourage interaction at work but be less invasive of privacy compared to regular Facebook. It will operate by connecting a user’s’ traditional FB account and link this account to their work one. Both apps will run simultaneously. How many workplaces have you experienced where employees simply “punch in and out” and do not partake in the active cultures that the companies endorse? I know I’ve seen a few that operated this way. This innovation will not promote distraction at work but fuel workplace cohesiveness by allowing employees to share documents and build stronger teams. Facebook has begun testing the product at companies with 100 or more employees while debugging occurs. There are several competitors in this crowded marketplace such as LinkedIn, Microsoft, Slack, Convo, and SocialCast, while a product by Google called Wave has already tried and failed. It will be interesting to see how LinkedIn will respond, since they have a stronghold and proven reputation in the networking arena. Facebook has been using the app internally since its inception too much approval. However, there a huge concerns surrounding the project, such as data ownership, reputation loss, and the general mindset that Facebook is a fun social platform better served outside the office.

This was a excellent article as we are heavily using Facebook for personal network, but when it comes to the using professional network we have to use LinkedIn. The ability to link the personal Facebook account to the work account will be great.Considering the revenue will not be generated through advertising, Facebook at work would be secured platform for business professional. My only concerns with this application is competition from linkedIn that allows free and paid subscription for the users. I think the best selling point for Facebook would be its familiarity among the users as the Facebook has much more user friendly experience.
I do not believe that that embracing social media in business will succeed in the long run, mainly due to the falling out of social media among this current generation and the one after it. However, if the social aspects of the workplace changed, say took on tones and activities that are “worth” doing, it might be a better sell than what is currently available.
