https://opendata.socrata.com/Government/Unclaimed-bank-accounts/n2rk-fwkj
This data talks about the amount of money that exists in unclaimed bank accounts for banks in the Edmonton area. I never realized the amount of money that stays in banks and that this information is allowed to be shared openly. The fact that the amount of money they have and their address is being presented definitely caught me off guard and struck me as interesting. -
This article was a data-drive analysis of mortality rates and deaths connected to 29 different cancers over a 34 year period in a record that covered the entire continental United States. The interesting aspects of this information are the regions in the U.S. that showed unusually high rates of mortality for specific cancers despite an overall decline in mortality. This could serve as reason to further investigate confounding factors like environmental and pollution influences or possibly a genetic predisposition among those regional populations. Ultimately, this article not only attributes the success of developing cancer treatments to medical professionals, highlighting forward medical advancements in cancer research, but it also serves as a map for where in the United States resources could be better focused along with which cancers pose the most threat to modern society.

This article examines discusses China financing its semi-conductor showcase, which causes sympathy toward the U.S. I thought this article was fascinating in light of the fact that it concentrates on the unmistakable items that permit information to be utilized each day. It will enthusiasm to perceive how this market creates and how it will influence outside relations between the U.S. China, and different nations that intensely import/send out semi-conductors. The fundamental expectation is of an expansion in duties, which can affect different markets.

http://flowingdata.com/2017/01/27/immersive-digital-waves-to-visualize-nature/ Not so much direct data used objectively to solve a problem. The type of data collected are real-time weather patterns all around the world. Instead of using that data to predict weather patterns for the future, an artist decided to use it to create elegant waves. These kind of waves give you a sense of how weather flows and is a great visualization.

“Know before you go: parking difficulty on Google Maps” via https://goo.gl/s1npQi
I already posted for today but this article was released shortly after and I had to use it as another example. This reminds me of the kind of thing Professor Spagnoletti had us do with the large-scale data sets in class on Friday. Google’s capabilities are extensive in the area of big data for obvious reasons. Search volume and traffic metrics allow Google to create solutions for common issues that users deal with in their everyday lives. This article highlights the new feature in Google Maps that allows you to see an estimated level of parking difficulty in busy areas so that you can plan ahead when driving in. This data saves tons of time and headaches for many commuters that deal with this exact problem everyday. Google’s methodology consists of cross-referencing Popular Times data with Visit Duration to predict what times of day are going to be the most difficult to find parking. As someone in digital advertising and technology, this interests me because of the possibilities for ride-sharing services like Lyft and Uber to utilize this data and predict when it would be more beneficial to carpool rather than try and find parking with your own car. In turn, they can place ads on Google Maps to reach users at the right moments and time of need.

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2017/jan/30/libratus-poker-artificial-intelligence-professional-human-players-competition
This article caught my eyes because nowadays artificial intelligence’s bot has become more and more popular. It’s interesting that we know the AI bots are learning much more faster than humans and can rationally predict the next step by algorithm.
From the IBM Watson won the first prize on the show Jeopardy! to the world famous AlphaGo beaten a 9-dan professional Go player without handicaps in the board game go, it makes me wonder why humans want to train robots through feeding them a large amount of data, and let them surpass human. However, watching the bots compete with humans always makes me admire the infinite possibilities of machine learning and starting to expect more. -
https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/what-it-takes-to-truly-delete-data/
The article I chose is titled, “What it Takes to Truly Delete Data.” What interest me the most about this article is how the database of immigrants can unfortunately help the President deport them out of the U.S. Since, data can never be erased completely unless you have total control of it everyone’s data can truly be exposed and effect their lives forever. Also, I think it is interesting how the company Greenchip tries to erase the data by writing several new digits to cover it and as a Pre-business major I would love to join this company so I can overwrite data to help protect personal information; for example protect undocumented immigrants that have developed a peaceful life in the U.S. -
http://www.zillow.com/research/zillow-group-report-2016-13279/#rentercharacter
Zillow is a great source of research about housing trends on the large- and small-scale. This report is about the broad US rental market and offers insights into what renters are looking for regionally as well. Of note was the section outlining the need for speedy replies to rental inquiries. Average renters contact 4.7 landlords when they start the rental search, and 40% expect a reply within 24 hours. If they do not receive a reply within their expected timeframe, almost 25% will move on to another listing. This is reflective of the high speed of communication that has become the standard due to the prevelance of the internet and points out that professionals in every industry need to adjust to the business climate if they hope to stay afloat. -
http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-economy-spending-idUSKBN15E1GK
The article talks about consumer spending in the months of December. This is interesting to me because I am a finance major and I will be taking into account of prices. In December of 2016, consumers bought more motor vehicles and winter utilities. The buying of long lasting products, such as vehicles, went up 1.4%, as people are confident in Trump’s potential tax cuts. Another item that increased in sales was the housing index that went up 1.6%. With all the increases in prices, the prices of U.S. bonds went up as well in the fourth quarter. Overall, the month of December saw consumers buying more which is helping the economy grow. -
http://www.barrons.com/articles/what-wall-street-gets-wrong-about-espn-1485813259
This article was very interesting to me because I am a Finance major and also a huge sports fan. In the article, it talks about how many people probably would think that ESPN, the largest sports network in the United States, would be a very profitable company under Disney. Well that is just not the case anymore and technology is advancing every day. Over the past three years, ESPN has lost about 2% of their subscribers annually due to more and more people streaming and cutting their “traditional” T.V. packages. Maybe in the future ESPN will no longer be a profitable anymore.

I chose the article because I am studying Economics and we had talked about health insurance recently. We all know that the health care cost higher and higher every year, and we all think that is because people living longer. But, the article says that the real culprit of increased spending is– technology. It really surprised me and makes me want to do more research. -
https://www.theguardian.com/society/datablog/2016/dec/13/europeans-massively-overestimate-muslim-population-poll-shows
This article was not related to my major, but I found it fascinating because it is a recent topic that is trending all over the world right now, especially in the U.S. about the Muslim population. The data in the article shows that Europeans and U.S. citizens are overestimating the population of Muslim and its rate of growing in these countries. Except for Russia, the Muslim population in all the countries surveyed were all under 10%, in the U.S. where this topic is controversial right now, the population founded is the least. I found this very interesting because in the U.S. the press and social media definitely make readers expect of a bigger population of Muslim. -
http://www.businessinsider.com/trump-visa-immigrant-order-tech-companies-h1b-chart-2017-1
This article seemed very interesting to me because of the fact that this very well may affect my lifestyle in the future. Even though it is a temporary ban, it still will affect the outcomes of each major companies. The fact that major companies such as Google, Apple, Oracle and etc pay six figures worth of salary, seems very interesting to me. I find it fascinating because even though majority of these companies are American, they’d hire American workers. But again the fact that there are a lot of foreign employees, makes me feel good. -
http://vizhub.healthdata.org/subnational/usa
I found an article with data visualization detailing US health data. I then narrowed my search to only show mental and substance use disorders across the country. I am a Human Resource Management major and I find mental health and the growing awareness and acceptance of mental health as a significant aspect of human health particularly interesting. The map displays deaths per 100,000 as a result of mental and substance use disorders and I was very impressed to see that it was recognized as a cause of death. Additionally, there is a lot of further research that can be conducted from what the interactive map displays. For example, there is an area in New Mexico, Rio Arriba County, that has the highest amount of deaths/thousand in the country at 73.15/100,000. I did some further research into this area and found out that there is an Indian Reservation in that county which is most likely why the data is so extreme. It is also interesting to see which regions in the US that have higher tolls and how those align with lower income areas and more. -
FanGraphs is one of the leading websites for baseball statistics for both the major and minor leagues. This article describes the projected statistics of the top 24 prospects for the St. Louis Cardinals. The author used KATOH projection, which is a newer projection system that combines defensive statistics and ground-ball rates with the Baseball Prospectus projection system. Through the new system, the players rating is shown through a likelihood of outcomes for the next six years of major league performance. The additional statistics create a better projection system that shows completely different projections from the recently published prospect rankings by Baseball Prospectus. I found it interesting that the addition of defensive statistics changed the projections because the defensive statistics are still questioned by many analysts. -
Trump, Clinton Voters Divided in Their Main Source for Election News
This publication in by PEW research covered Trump and Clinton supporters and where they got their main sources of news from. For Trump supporters, 40% got their news from Fox news followed by CNN which was not even close at 8%. On the other hand, Clinton supporters’ main media source was CNN at 18%, followed by MSNBC at 9%, and Fox News at last with 3%. What I found surprising was that 8% of Clinton supporters used Facebook as their main source of media, compared to Trump’s 7%. I found this surprising because of the recent outlash of ‘fake-news’ and how many media outlets are saying that Facebook’s fake news cost Clinton the election. On the other hand, I kind of expected most Trump supporters to follow Fox News because it is one of the only main conservative outlets, whereas Clinton supporters chose to follow more liberal media outlets such as CNN, MSNBC, NYT, etc.. -
VR and AR is really interesting, this makes me curious about their growth recent years. There are many platforms to VR and AR, such as Mobile AR, Mobile VR, Console/PC VR, Smart Glasses AR/VR..etc. The site says that Mobile VR is still going to be big, but it might take a little longer to get there. In my opinion, mobile VR is going big but the hardware limits the use of it, even computers needs huge computing power to provide high quality scene, but I believe, in the future it will be very easy to cary a VR capable device around.

http://www.businessinsider.com/trumps-tweets-are-driving-quant-traders-crazy-2017-1
As a Finance major I enjoyed this article because I have previously thought about the great opportunity that Trump tweets give to day traders. Particularly interesting to me though was the section on the company called Trigger that alerts investors on things. Trigger, the article says recently created an alert “that tips off investors when Trump tweets about a listed company”. I can see that being a good alert, however investors should realize that this alert will miss many of his tweets that do not specifically mention companies, but do effect certain markets or industries. -
200 years of US immigration data put Trump’s ban into context
This article talks about Donald Trump’s ban on immigration from countries that have a primary Muslim community. Though the article does not cover much about it, it does mention that science and medicine are being greatly affected by this ban. As a biology/pre-medical major, I am curious as to how this will affect science and medicine as a whole, and if the affects will be noticeable to the public. Aside from just my major, I am incredibly against the ban on immigration, and hope that the US will find a way to become more accepting to immigrants as it was meant to be. The data given in this article shows how many immigrants have come to the US from various countries over the last 200 years, in a graph format. -
http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20170125005110/en/RiskSense-Unveils-Multi-Client-Dashboard-Enables-Managed-Service
This article relates to my major which is Risk Management and Insurance. Risk Sense has recently discovered a Multi-Client Dashboard which delivers risk management offerings that relate to each client’s risk exposures and vulnerabilities, mainly regarding Cyber Risk. This discovery, if used effectively, will greatly benefit the Risk Management and Insurance business because Cyber Risk is a huge exposure with high severity. This dashboard uses data based solely on that particular client which will create more accurate protection and coverage. -
https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/what-it-takes-to-truly-delete-data/
This article talked about New York’s IDNYC, a card meant to help the government related problems of the immigrant population in New York. It came to light due to Trump’s plan to deport illegal immigrants, as it made people question whether or not the government would keep the data. Although different laws and policies were put in place in order to maintain the data, people fear that it is only a matter of time before Trump is able to go through and delete the data. What I particularly found interesting about the article was how it discussed how data can not truly be deleted due to the multiple copies of it that can be saved in hard drives and cloud services around the world. For me, who always thought that emptying the recycling bin was enough to delete the data, I found this particularly worrying and in some ways a breach of privacy. However, I still do not know enough to truly give an opinion on it. -
https://opendata.socrata.com/Business/Top-5-000-Companies-from-INC-com/n4ex-cets
I looked at a data set of the Top 5,000 Companies from INC.com. On this data set it shows the rank, company, where it is located, what industry it is in, and what the growth and revenue are. I find this very interesting and important especially if you are in the search for a new career or a new industry to get in. While taking a look at the data set, you can find companies in your region that are excelling past the rest in whichever field you are in. -
http://www.zdnet.com/article/telstra-cant-foresee-its-plans-for-5g-iot-data-usage-and-pricing/
I found an article saying that Telstra, Australia’s biggest media & telecommunications company, is not quite sure what they will do with the data earned from IoT. This was interesting because first of all, I didn’t know the era of IoT will come so fastly. The second reason was that I saw many companies weren’t quite ready for this boom of data. The devices, and technology for IoT is getting way more faster and better, but companies like Telstra, still don’t know what to do with this data. By seeing this article, I thought that the IoT era wouldn’t be a totally-optimistic situation. It may help us human beings to live more comfortable, intellectual lives, but it also may be disastrous with more noise to filter. It shows the importance of analyzing, and making use of the raw data earned from IoT. -
Public Sees Wealthy People, Corporations Gaining Influence in Trump Era
The public has taken very different views about who will benefit most under a Trump presidency. 64% of Americans believe the wealthy will benefit the most from his presidential run, while only 27% expect the wealthy not be affected. Another interesting fact in the data set in this article was that 74% of people say business corporations will increase their influence during his run. As someone who wants to work for a big corporation, and eventually get in to politics, these data sets are extremely helpful because they show the true public opinion. -
https://www.bls.gov/cex/tables.htm
Being a business major I tried to find something that gave data on what certain consumers in different ages, demographics, genders, and different incomes are like. This data can give you everything about different areas of people, from what their average income is, to what they spend most of their money on. Using this data you would be able to know for wherever you business is, what the people there are like and what you would need to do to make them more likely to buy your product. Even if you are a business that is nationwide, you get specific data for all different regions so you can specialize depending on where you are, and who you want to sell your product to. -
In this article French Tech Firm Spotter has developed a analytical program which determines that the comment are sarcastic or not. By collecting big data from social media they have proven that this is possible to some extent. Even other companies like oracle, salesforce and IBM have developed sentiment analytical systems too. Even in Obama Campaign this type of program was used too determine that whom voters are happy with and whom they are waiting. Its just a matter of time that data will change this world. -
https://www.ft.com/content/65342eb2-e7ab-11e6-893c-082c54a7f539
This article that the Financial Times published talks about a power exchange between the old and new worlds of finance. New legislation discusses the open market of banks and data. The new legislation is to boost the competition between the old and new worlds of finance. The new law would require that the “big banks” allow third parties to have access to data from customers who authorize it. I thought this was rather interesting because the proposed legislation is requiring the banks to allow access of their data to the third party companies. -
https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/what-it-takes-to-truly-delete-data/
This article talks about how hard it is to truly delete data. I eventually want to go into cyber security so this article was very interesting to me. A lot of our data is now stored in the cloud and the problem with that is, unlike hard drives, you do not have full control over the cloud data. The article also talks about how data is never really deleted, just covered up. It gives the example of painting a wall. If you want to get rid of one color, you have to put many coats of another color over it, but usually that isn’t enough and you can still tell that the original color is there. This is why people need to me much more aware of the things they are putting on the internet because once its out there it can be accessed forever.

My major being as as it may business administration , and my future line of work being Private Banking it is required of me to acquire information, resources, and data on all of the investment opportunities I may bring to them. A well planned portfolio with high a profit percentage and low risk can only be acquired through information, backing that information, and testing it to make sure the plan is ready for a green light. The article supports my line of work, because google is helping me choose what stocks to research and how those stocks will grow or fall in the immediate future, this data helps make me decisions that will impact my customers either making them extremely rich or disappointed by loss and it is my job to make sure loss doesn’t happen. In conclusion this article would greatly help my enterprise and for that I have chosen it for my weekly question

http://money.cnn.com/2017/01/31/technology/trump-cybersecurity-executive-order/index.html
There was a recent cyber attack against twitter, Netflix, and major companies in the US along with Europe. It is believed that there was a multitude of internet connected devices that were utilized in this attack. As a response our president Donald Trump, drafted an executive order that calls for a complete review of the most critical hacking vulnerabilities in the nation’s military, intelligence and civilian government computer systems. It’s a vast procedure that would include examining the computer networks of internet service providers, data centers and many private companies used by the government. It’s frightening how these vulnerabilities will only grow in size as the capabilities of our technology advances.

This article considers the impact of utilizing large amounts of data to facilitate the financial aspect of businesses. Data analytics is being used in a variety of ways by many types of businesses. Some companies are utilizing the information to predict and prevent breakdowns in production. In the past, production would halt when equipment or programs fail and the companies would have to respond to the problems as they occurred. Now, through data analytics these breakdowns in systems are being prevented which maintains production. Another significant use of analytics in finance is to make the customers’ experience as positive as possible to create and maintain loyalty to the companies.

“A Narrative Science survey found last year that 38% of enterprises are already using AI, growing to 62% by 2018.” This is a shocking fact for me. I knew business jobs will be taken by artificial intelligence. Fortunately, I switched to statistics field and I was right! AI is definitely the next growing market and business management is vanishing because of that.
