I think abundance certainly drives innovation. But if you think of scarcity right, imagine going back to the primitive era where there was not a single smart phone that existed, then there was a scarcity. So Scarcity in turn made people think, come up with a idea, collaborate and then bring those ideas to reality, isnt it? I think its a cycle. I…[Read more]

Kevin very well said. What good a program is, if it doesnt do any good to the company nor the people in it. I agree, revenue generation with any products/services that were derived out out these programs would be a perfect measure and also a business case to retain such a program. I also second to what you said above by measuring any process…[Read more]

This reminds me of a PBS TV channel which runs on donations made by viewers like you and me. This doesnt mean that ABC or others arent doing well, but they are. Its just allows for everyone to compete and also allows viewers to chose what they wish to. We already see the monopoly with the cable companies, in the town where I live, there is just…[Read more]

Ron, that is very interesting to learn that your company has something similar to Siemens. Thanks for sharing. Looks like your company has its mixed share of success and failures like anything else out there. Like Lackner says on page 2 of the article, where he questions what if they shut down the open innovation program at Siemens, would it be…[Read more]

I too see a similarity with Radiohead case where they went out of the traditional way of selling or pricing their recorded album and found some success by making their album digital. As Joel says, low cost, low risk aspects might be attractive and a viable option to writers who haven’t found any success despite their struggle to find a p…[Read more]

SumanthKumar Sreeramaiah (Kumar) commented on the post, Case Question: Open Innovation, on the site 9 years, 7 months ago
I believe open innovation is a great way to encourage employees to be more creative and provides a platform where ideas are shared, where ideas are brought from concept to reality and fosters collaboration among various employees, across various groups within the company.
This could be a great way to promote disruptive innovation. As professor…[Read more] -

Radiohead had a reputation for experimenting with unconventional album release tactics. They wanted to find ways other than conventional ways, to get their records into as many hands as possible. Over years, they were very well known and had a huge following, which was large enough to make their albums make it to top of the chart. The fan…[Read more]

I don’t think the age of agents and publishers are dead just yet. They do remain unlike in any other business where innovation is imminent. It’s always hard to break in for the first time, once you do it then you are golden. I think this applies to everything we do in our lives from something being a simple task to the hardest one, just like get…[Read more]

At my work I am the brainchild of a newly found forum where we meet quarterly to share our experiences and knowledge gained by using an application/software that we regularly use at work. So colleagues from various groups within our company meet, and we have speakers who are our colleagues who like to share their knowledge and also learn from…[Read more]

I believe abundance breaks more things than scarcity but not always. Supply and demand are interdependent in every situation. If there is scarcity of supply then demand is higher for any innovations.
If we think of third world countries, where there is scarcity for everything, the society or citizens of that nations work hard to just get by,…[Read more] -

Bruce, thanks for sharing the info. I didnt know McD was in NZ even before I was born. But I cant make an excuse just bcos I was born after – right 🙂

Bruce good question! I never had thought about it when I wrote it.
Well if a company was doing business in several nations, without any use of computers or technology, in order to reach economies of scale or sustain their business/growth, their tasks may have been much harder and a bit overkill in the past. They could not have operated as…[Read more]

SumanthKumar Sreeramaiah (Kumar) commented on the post, Reading Question: BYOD, on the site 9 years, 8 months ago
Thats another problem with these BYOD. Often times either you end up carrying two devices like Saqib mentioned or you end up not taking advantage of the BYOD benefit at all. IT in some companies do not want to implement or maintain different security systems on various BYOD devices. IT communism as the article suggests will dictate what you should…[Read more]

Duke its very interesting to learn that BYOD was an initiative to build employee satisfaction in the form of a added perk at your workplace. After successfully divesting the non-pharmaceutical businesses, Wyeth’s goal was to organize its operations so that it could start taking advantage of all the divestures and reorganizations and become a true globally integrated organization. IT was seen as a true enabler towards achieving globalization at Wyeth. Local firms bought local products and there was no system in place to handle global supply chain, there was…[Read more]

Duke good point. I do believe building our own IT infrastructure and systems could be expensive. Paul I agree, relying too much on a AWS service may lead to other problems that could be detrimental to the Banking services. A balanced approach could be ideal but where do we draw the line is the question. Having everything in house is not a viable solution to some companies, but for some it may be the only option.
