On the Website for professional achievement points, I see the options of “Full-time MIS internship”, and the “Part-time MIS Internship.” In order to count, does an internship have to list “Management information systems” like the Fox-net Internships or can it be internships that say ” Information Technology, Computer science or related major?

A platform is a business model, and platform-mediated networks is a framework. Using these concepts, identify a platform associated with a given company and discuss how network effects facilitate exchange and […]

Platforms create large networks of users and resources that can be accessed whenever. This allows entrepreneurs or even just everyday people to interact and contact with each other in a professional online environment. Network effects facilitate exchange and create distribution value among players because it allows people to interact online. “Platforms don’t own the means of production, instead, they create the means of connection”.
-
A platform associated with a given company is Alibaba. Network effects facilitate exchange and create distribution value among players through the interaction and transaction between consumers and producers. Consumers and producers are more easily to connect to each other with the network effects. Platform can be mobile app, website, content platform, payments platform and communication platform. Network effects increases in usage by one set of users increases the value of a product for other users.
-
A company with a platform business model is Airbnb. The more users this platform has, the more valuable and useful it is. This also increases other users’ willingness to pay. In one of our articles, it says that “what a company owns matters less than what it can connect”. This is why network effects play an important role in connecting consumers and producers to each other as well as connecting users to other users.
-
One of the companies that has a platform business model is Uber which relies on networks, network effects facilitate exchange and create distribution value among players because it allows people to interact online. People can do business or get service through an app and the whole system is running based on credits. Uber is an successful example of sharing economy and its value is still potential with the popularity of itself.

One common company that uses a platform is Facebook. The specialty with Facebook is that it uses a technology/social media platform. Within this technological platform, many users can connect and network with people through various factors on the site, such as liking and commenting on statuses, joining groups and pages, etc. No matter how old Facebook is getting by the years, it will always be a form of a social media platform that will flourish because of its network effects and distribution value that allow individuals to interact with other users via mobile devices.

I found it very interesting how the speaker made the connection between data and history, with the creation of the Openpaths and Cascade applications. I always overlooked the concept of “putting data into human context,” and this made me look at programming from a whole new perspective. It is neat that our data can be uploaded or used to create stories and build relationships simply because they are attached to real-world experiences. I never really thought about it in this way of creating empathy, history, and connections, just based on given data.
This Ted Talk humanized data. I am beginning to understand how data can be used to influence peoples’ lives, and provide meaningful analytics. I liked the man’s venn diagram, which showed how his systems are a combination of science, design, and art. The exploratory Cascade system, shows how peoples’ interactions contribute to the distribution of media. This is especially useful for his work at The New York Times, since he can monitor how articles are shared. Before, I thought data was just numbers, but after watching this video, I realize how meaningful data can be. He used data to help design the 9/11 Memorial, which was very touching.
I have never looked at data in this way! It seemed so real and interactive, which was cool. The 3D designs and diagrams not only showed what the data stated, but how everything connects. It also wasn’t all just MIS, but graphics and science all together. The part of the video that I loved most was the 9/11 memorial. I honestly thought the names were in alphabetical order, not how they were connected relationship wise. It’s amazing! The TED talk was extremely interesting, and gave me a new sense as to what data can be. Touching, personal, and humanized.
Never thought that data can be managed in this way before, I was surprised that data can be modelled in a way that combines with graphic and shapes. I thought it was just numbers or a list of documents. This video gives me a new sight about MIS.
